TARANTULA FLAT

Listed in CHAMBERLAIN’s The Call of Gold as one of the unique place names in the Coulterville-Yosemite Road region.  No location is given.   I assume it would be somewhere between Coulterville and Yosemite Valley.           

           

TEMPERANCE CREEK

Temperance Creek flows north out of Hunter Valley and enters the Merced River from the east.  The confluence is under the waters of Lake McClure, 1.2 miles north of the power lines and the southwest end of the lake.  In 1860, a 4-stamp mill was located along the creek.

 

TEXANA

This 1850s era gold mining camp was located on the Merced River near Pleasant Valley.  Actual location not determined.

 

TEXAS GULCH

This hard rock gold mine was located directly on the Mother Lode vein system a mile southwest of Mt. Bullion.

           

TEXAS HILL MINE

The Texas Hill Mine was operated intermittently between 1865 and 1943, producing over $74,000 in gold.  It was located two miles southwest of Kinsley about a mile east of the North Fork of the Merced River, ten miles east of Coulterville near the hill marked on the map as Texas Hill.  It is in the Kinsley Mining District.

 

TEXAS MINE

This c1882 era gold mine was located on the North Fork of the Merced River, and was owned by Mr. BRUSCHI.  Do not confuse with the BRUSCHI Mine, which is in a different location. It may have been the same as the Texas Hill Mine (above). (GBS)

 

TEXAS TENT

Listed in CHAMBERLAIN’s The Call of Gold as one of the unique place names in the Coulterville-Yosemite Road region.  No location is given.   I assume it would be somewhere between Coulterville and Yosemite Valley.           

 

THURMAN & WRIGHT’S DREDGE #3

THURMOND’S SAWMILL

In 1879, William THURMOND purchased a sawmill that was located at Owl Creek.

 

TIMBER LODGE

            Located along SH 140 a mile northwest of Midpines.

TOLEDO GULCH

Possibly the same location as Tulitos.  This small mining camp was located on Toledo Gulch, which flows into Burns Creek about four miles northeast of Hornitos.

 

TRABUCCO GARDENS

On SH 49, 08 mile southeast of Bear Valley.  It was the site of the original TRABUCCO store and home.

 

TRUJILLO MINES GROUP

This complex of mines was located at the headwaters of Burns Creek, about 5.5 AIR miles northeast of Hornitos.

TULITOS

This 1850s mining camp was located between Hornitos and Indian Gulch.  Exact location not determined.                    

 

TYRO MINE

         AKA – Rittershoffen Mine

            Located in the Coulterville Mining District, about a mile southwest of

Coulterville and just south of the Malvina Mine.  Consolidated into the Malvina Group.  It was worked from the 1850s through the early 1900s.  It produced about $110,000 in gold.

UNCLE JIM MINE

This old mine was located in the Clearinghouse Mining District.  Actual location not determined.

 

UNION MINE

This c1884 gold mine was located in the Sweetwater Mining District, and was owned by Mr. RICE and FERGUSON.  Its actual location is not determined.

 

UPPER AGUA FRIA

AKA – Poverty Flat

         ...SEE individual listing for Agua Fria.

 

USONA

The name of this rural post office (1913-1942), fire station and scattered community, is an acronym standing for the United States Of North America.  It is located on the north side of the junction of         SH 49/Usona Road, 10.4 miles east of Mormon Bar (12 miles east-southeast of Mariposa).

VANDERBILT MINE

The 400 ft tunnel of this hard rock mine was located on Mount Buckingham.  Actual location not determined. 

 

VIRGINIA MINE                                                                 PHOTO!

Located on Virginia Point, west of SH 49 at a point 3.8 miles north of Bagby, four miles south of Coulterville, and just north of Bagby Summit.  This is another early hard rock mine.  Between 1850 and the 1950s, it produced over $660,000 in gold from its 1300’ inclined shaft.  Total production amounted to $824,000.  It is one of the earliest patented mines in the state.
