OAK & REESE MINE

OAKES & REESE MINE

This gold mine was located in Hunter Valley.  The exact location of this gold mine is not determined.  Between 1863-1938, this mine produced $500-600,000 in gold, and had a 12-stamp mill

 

OAKES MINE

            …SEE Oakes & Reese Mine.    

 

OAK GROVE

            A one-room school was located here. Location not determined.

 

OAKLAND

In California Gold Camps, GUDDE calls this a “doubtful name shown as a sizeable town east of Horseshoe Bend.”

           

OAKVALE SCHOOL (2-sites)

The second site of this one-room school was located along Ben Hur Road and Becknell Creek, 3.9 miles south of Ben Hur.  It operated from 1860-1945.  The first site was just to the north and across the creek.

 

OLD TIMER MINE

In the Clearinghouse Mining District.  Actual location not determined.

 

OPHIR

            ...SEE Mount Ophir

 

OPHIR MINE

Located about a mile south of Mount Ophir, midway between SH 49 and the “old toll road”.

 

ORANGE BLOSSOM MINE

A gold mine located in Hunter Valley.  The exact location not determined.

 

ORIGINAL MINE

         …SEE Clearing House

 

ORO GRANDE MINE

Consolidated with the Diltz Mine in 1949.  It was located on the East Belt vein system in the Whitlock Mining District, about a mile east of the Nutmeg Mine.  The consolidated Diltz-Oro Grande Mine closed in 1952.

 

ORO RICO MINE

ORTEGA MINE
The Ortega Mine was located on SH 140, south of Mt. Bullion, in the Mount Bullion Mining District.  It was discovered in the early 1850s, and was acquired by Colonel FREMONT in 1859 along with his other holdings.  It became idle in 1942.

 

OSO MINE

Located in the Bagby Mining District, this gold mine produced over $50,000.  Actual location not determined.

 

OUR CHANCE MINE

This hard rock gold mine is located in the Whitlock Mining District, 0.8 miles west of the junction of Sherlock and Whitlock roads.  It was a pocket mine, and closed in 1946.  Production figures are not known.

 

OWL CREEK

In 1879, William THURMOND purchased a sawmill that was located at Owl Creek.  Location not determined.

 

OWL MINE

On the east side of Bear Creek, one mile south of Indian Gulch Road, 2.4 AIR miles northwest of the junction of SH 140/Indian Gulch Road, at a point 2.4 AIR miles southwest of Cathey’s Valley.
