LAKE McCLURE

This is not a ghost town, but a large reservoir originally formed by construction of the Exchequer Dam on the Merced River in 1926.  In the mid 1960s the dam was raised 175’, creating Lake McClure and backing the reservoir up as far as Bagby/Benton Mills.  This horseshoe-shaped lake lies in the northwestern part of the county, west of SH 49 and southwest of Coulterville.  Many old ghost towns and mining camps along this portion of the Merced River have been covered by the lake’s water.  For details follow the links to the appropriate listing pages.
