RANCH GULCH

This 1850s era gold mining camp was located six miles from Mariposa.  Actual location not determined.

 

RANCHERIA FLAT

This former Yosemite Valley Railroad station/construction camp was also the site of Barium mining operations.  In 1975 it was the site of housing for employees of Yosemite National Park.  It is located north of the Merced River and SH 140, just west of El Portal at the mouth of Moss Canyon. 

Probably not a ghost. GBS

 

RAYSEED MINE

One of several dozen mines located in the Sherlock-Whitlock area.  Actual location not determined, but it was in the Whitlock Mining District.

           

RED BANK MINE

This old gold mine was located in the Bagby Mining District west of SH 49, between the road and the Merced River, at a point about two miles northwest of Bagby.  It was in intermittent operation from the 1860s-1960s, producing over $100,000 in gold.

 

RED CLOUD MINE

This mine was located about 3.5 miles east of Greeley Hill on the north side of the Merced River.  It was at its peak in the 1885-1895 period.  Total production was about $1.5 million in gold. It was in the Greeley Hill Mining District, which is part of the larger Kinsley Mining District.

 

RED CLOUD MINING DISTRICT

The Red Cloud Mine listed in the Greeley Hill Mining District was probably in this small mining district. (GBS)  It was in the Greeley Hill Mining District, which is part of the larger Kinsley Mining District.

 

RED GULCH  

Listed in CHAMBERLAIN’s The Call of Gold as one of the unique place names in the Coulterville-Yosemite Road region.  No location is given.   I assume it would be somewhere between Coulterville and Yosemite Valley.           

 

RED MOUNTAIN MINE

This gold mine was located in the Kinsley Mining District.  Actual location not determined.

 

REESE MINE

REX MINE

RICH MINE

This gold mine was located in the Cathey Mining District.  It was in operation from the 1850s through the 1930s.  Actual location not determined.

RIDLEY’S FERRY

From the summer of 1850-1852, Thomas E. RIDLEY owned and operated a ferry along the Merced River just below the future site of Benton Mills/Bagby.  Now covered by Lake McClure.

ROLLINS MINE

In 1885, a Mr. ADAMS and CARTER owned this gold mine at an undetermined location.           

 

ROMA MINE (#1)

ROMA MINE (#2)

One of several mines in the Jerseydale Mining District.  Actual location not determined.  May be the same as #1 above?  (GBS)

 

ROOSEVELT MINE

Located in the Saxton Creek area of the Whitlock Mining District.  Actual location not determined.

 

ROSENSTEIN CREEK

A name mentioned by COOK in passing with other interesting names.  No location is listed.

 

RUM HOLLOW

In California Gold Camps, GUDDE gives the location of this place as “Four and a half miles from Hornitos.”  Actual location not determined.

 

RUTH PIERCE MINE

Located south of Hornitos Road, four miles east-southeast of Hornitos and 1.8 miles west of Corbet Creek.  Total production reached between  $600,000 – 800,000.  Part of the Hornitos Mining District.

 

RUTHERFORD MINE

RUTHERFORD & CRANBERRY MINE

In the Clearinghouse Mining District.  Appears to be the consolidation of two mines.  Actual location not determined.

 

RUTHERFORD’S MILL

In 1864, this gold-quartz mill operated along the “Middle Fork” (Main branch?) of the Merced River about two miles above Green’s Store, which was possibly located at or near the confluence of the South Fork with the main Merced River near the community of South Fork.
