McMillan Cemetery- Now Erin Pioneer Cemetery

Lot 18, Concession IX, Erin Township, Wellington County

This cemetery stands on a height of land on the west side of County Road #23, overlooking the Town of Erin to the south. The land was originally owned by Donald McMillan, who donated it for a cemetery. Previously there had been a school there until other schools were built in the area and it was discontinued in 1837.

The cemetery gradually fell into disrepair and several efforts were made to restore it. Extensive repairs were made in 1941, 1959 and 1963. It is now, very well maintained by a group of interested volunteers.

Memorial Plaque

Formerly called the McMillan Cemetery after the family who donated the land, it was in use from 1834 to 1935. Here are buried many of Erin's prominent early residents, including Daniel McMillan, known as the founder of Erin Village. It was also the site of the second school built in Erin Township. This cemetery is being preserved to perpetuate the remembrance of these illustrious pioneers buried here.

Erected in 1980 by the Erin Pioneer Cemetery Board with the assistance of the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Recreation.

St. James Anglican Pioneer Cemetery

the following description is taken from the "History of Maryborough Township 1851 - 1976"
St. James Cemetery
One of the early burying grounds in the township of Maryborough was established by the congregation of St. James Anglican Church at the time they erected their first church on the northern outskirts of the village of Rothsay.

For many years St. James Cemetery has been unused.  Today the many tombstones dating back to as early as the year 1858 have been placed in a cairn by the roadside as a fitting memorial to many of the brave and courageous men and women who settled the area many years ago.

Medill Cemetery
and

St. John's
Cemetery

These two cemeteries were combined are located just outside Moorefield.  There is no marker at the site to explain what the name of the cemetery was. The following descriptions are taken from the "History of Maryborough Township 1851 - 1976"

The Medill Cemetery
In the year 1853, William and Joseph Medill built a small Baptist Church on their farms, Lot 14, Con. 9 of Maryborough and established a cemetery in the churchyard.
Both William and Joseph Medill were active in Municipal affairs.  William was a member of the first township council, holding the office of reeve and deputy reeve.  Joseph was the township treasurer for approximately thirty years.
For many years the small burying groun lay in a neglected state.  In 1970 the headstones were moved and relocated in St. John Anglican cemetery on the 8th Concession.  Today the Medill Cemetery is unmarked and uncared for.

St. Johns Cemetery
St. Johns Cemetery was established by the Anglican Church on the eastern corner of Lot 10 on the 8th concession, on land deeded to the Bishop of Niagara by John King who at the time of his death in 1861 was buried in the cemetery.
The tombstone of Mrs. Francis Morgan, the mother of twelve children, died at the age of thirty-seven in the year 1860.
In 1970 the tombstones of St. Johns Cemetery, combined with stones moved from the Medill burying ground, were arranged to form a memorial cairn.

The Anglican cemetery of Drew is one of the oldest in the district. Under the supervision of Minto Township Council it was reclaimed in 1931. In pioneer days the cemetery was adjacent to the Anglican Church until 1905, when the Church was moved to Lot 18, Concession 16.

Ten graves are known to exist in this cemetery.

Drew-North Salem Cemetery - Con. 18

The Crown reserved the property for this cemetery on Concession 18 and it was operated by three trustees . After the first World War the Salem Community expressed their patriotism by erecting a cenotaph in the cemetery in memory of the 14 young men who died in the conflict.

The names are: G.D. Adair, C. Baker, A.H. Ellis, D.E. Howes M.D., B. Kennedy, S. Lawrence, M. A Matthews, C. J. Matthews, W. T. Reeve, E. H. Scase, V. Slinger, B.S. Small, F. Small, and W. Adair.

In 1965 the men of the Church cleaned up the cemetery and set the stones on a base. Wallace Matthews erected a flag a the cenotaph.

Salem Methodist Church (North) - Con. 18, Lot 27

From 1894-1968, this cemetery was located on the Normanby-Minto Townline.

The Church was dedicated as The Salem Methodist Church in September, 1894 and in 1925 became a United Church. Ministers were: Rev. Savage, McLean, Chrown, Walker, Seibim, Philips, Bell, Kistles, Exhert, Smitherman, Taylor, Eyer, Evans, Kaer, Stewwart, McLellan, Burgess, Mercer, Moote, Watt, Moot, Falconbridge, Truax, Brand and E.J. Whetham.

The Ladies Aid was organized in 1910 and on December 25, 1917 the parsonage burned down and was rebuilt thanks to funding by the Ladies Aid group.

After 74 years of ministry, Salem Church was closed in 1968. The closing service was held June 6, 1968 with the last minister, Roy Harwood, preaching.

A memorial Cairn was built by Donald and Wayne Shannon incorporating the orginal stone engraved Methodist Church Salem 1894.

Nichol Township

Ponsonby Cemetery

I took the two pictures April 21, 2001, as part of our family reunion activities.  The dedication marker faces the highway, i.e., I was standing near the highway and was able to take the view from that location.  As you can see, the gathered stones are collected into a concrete, slanted base to the right of the dedication marker as viewed from the road. I took a picture of the only stone that seemed to relate to my family.  It did not occur to me that I might run across your fine site.  The wording on the stone is as follows:

William J. / Son of / GEORGE & MARY ANN / ARISS(.) / died / Mar. 17, 1877; / Aged 4 Yr's 10 / Mo's & 16 Dy's / We loved this little one / And would have wished him stay. / But let our Father's will be done; / He shines in endless day. / WATSON & LAMBERT ELORA

The stone now appears to have said: " In memory of Margaret Ann HOWSE wife of George BROWN / d 12 Jul 1886 ae 27 Yrs".
(Photo taken July 2004)

This stone is set to my viewing right of that of Joseph HADLEY and is that of Charlotte NEWMAN. This stone is broken and we could not read clearly the name of her husband; however, we interpreted the stone to read: In Memory of / Charlotte / wife of / ____ Newman / who died Octb 20 / 1875 / Aged 72 Years / Native of / Northamptonshire / ENGLAND.  This was followed by a 4 line epitaph which we did not transcribe and concluded with (?) / Elora.  Marjorie Dow recorded the inscription as: In memory of Charlotte wife of John Newman who died 20 Oct 1875 ae 72 Years / Native of / Northamptonshire / England

This stone is set to my viewing right of that of Thomas HOWSE and is that of Joseph HADLEY.  Sue and I read the inscription to be: In memory of / Joseph Hadley / who died / Jan 25 1878 / aged 67 years / Matilda / wife of the above / died June 5, 18__ (?).  Marjorie Dow recorded the inscription as: In memory of Thomas LASBY who died Jan 25 1878 / ae 67 years / Matilda wife of the above who died June 5 / 1854 ae 36 yrs

This photo is of me, James Barry Ariss, and of the stone to my viewing right of that of Ann HOWSE which is that of Thomas HOWSE.  Sue and I read the inscription to be: In Memory of / Thomas Howse / who died Oct' 7 / 1874 / Aged 86 Years / Native of / Northamptonshire / ENGLAND / He's gone: the loved & cherished one / Like some bright star he passed away / Death claimed his victim and he sank / Calm as the sun's expiring ray / Douglas & Brown / Elora.  Marjorie Dow recorded the inscription as: In memory of Thomas HOWSE who died Oct 7 1874 / ae 86 years Native of Northamptonshire / England

This stone is set to my viewing right of that of Martin MARTIN and is that of Ann HOWSE.  Sue and I read the inscription to be: (?) Ann (?) Howse / wife of Thomas Howse / Dec 17, 1880 / AGED / 92 Years.  Marjorie Dow recorded the inscription as: In memory of Ann Howse sister of Thomas & James / died 17 Dec 1880 ae 92 yrs.

This stone is set to my viewing right of that of Margaret Ann HOWSE and is that of Martin MARTIN.  The inscription reads: SACRED / to the memory of / MARTIN MARTIN / died 30th Mar 1872 / Aged 84 Years / A native of / Sussex, England

The first is set to my viewing right of that of Charlotte NEWMAN and is that of George HOWSE. This inscription we interpreted to read: In Memory of / GEORGE / son of / Thomas Howse / who died / June 16, 1858 / AE __39 years / also his daughter / MARY / wife of Daniel Peckover / died Feb 17, 1855 / AE 32 Years
Marjorie Dow recorded the inscription as:  In Memory of George son of Thomas HOWSE who died 16 / June 1858 ae 39 yrs / Also his dau MARY wife of Daniel PECKOVER / died 17 Feb 1855 ae 32 years

The second is set to my viewing right of that of George HOWSE and is that of Levi PATMORE.  The inscription reads: In memory of / LEVI PATMORE / who died July 1st / 1872 / Aged 55 years 4 mo / Douglas & Brown / Elora

Is of the right hand end of the tombstones of the upper course and the stone is probably that of Mary LASBY.  The inscription was difficult to interpret, but we read it to be: In remembrance / Mary / -- - / Joseph / ___ / who died Dec 31, 1876 / aged 28 yrs 8 / mos & 25 dys
This was followed by an epitaph which we did not transcribe.
Marjorie Dow recorded the inscription as:  In Memory of Mary beloved wife of Joseph LASBY / who died Dec 31 1876 / ae 28 yrs 8 mos 25 dys

This stone is at the right hand end of the tombstones of the lower course and is "below" that of Mary Lasby and is that of Joseph HALL.  The inscription reads: In memory of / JOSEPH HALL / Feby 7th 1801 / Aged 41 years
Davidson / Guelph
Marjorie Dow recorded the inscription as:  In memory of Joseph HALL died Beb'y 7th 1861 / ae 41 years
This stone is set to my viewing left of that of Joseph HALL and is that of Elizabeth HORTON.  Sue and I read the inscription as: In memory of / ELIZABETH HORTON / Beloved wife of / George BYA, / who died Oct 30, 1851 / AE 57 years / also their son / GEORGE / died Mar 25 1859 / AE 28 years / NATIVES OF AYNHO / NORTH HAMPTONSHIRE / ENGLAND
Marjorie Dow recorded the inscription as: In memory of Elizabeth HORTON beloved wife of / George BYE who died Oct 20, 1851 / ae 57 years / Also their son George died Mar 25 1859 / ae 28 years / Natives of Aynho, North Hamptonshire / England

Please contact Jim Ariss if you have ARISS connections at [email protected]

Additional information: ...As Sue and I found some of the stones to be in poor condition, while others were in remarkably good condition, we found it necessary to supplement our recording of the etchings on the stone with information from "BRANCH NOTES, Volume VIII, Number 2, of the Waterloo-Wellington Branch of O.G.S."
The additional information was contained in an article from those "BRANCH NOTES" submitted by my 4th cousin, Marjorie Ruth Dow, nee Martin.  Marjorie's article was titled: "Monumental Inscriptions Ponsonby Cemetery".  She notes the location of the cemetery as "Lot 1 Concession VI On Elora Road north of Marden, being the township line between Nichol and Pilkington Townships.  Ponsonby was a preaching point on the Bethany Circuit (Pilkington Township) of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, now United Church of Canada.  Bethany is aligned with the Elora Pastoral Charge of the U.C.C."  Marjorie further notes the usage of the original cemetery to be from 1843 to 1890 and that her data was recorded in 1979.
As the "first" stone had survived as separate pieces, Marjorie observes: "(Note: Stone badly weathered in 1979 -- wording provided by Mrs. Maisie (Clifford) HOWSE, Ariss, Ontario, who copied same in 1966.)
