McMillan Cemetery- Now Erin Pioneer Cemetery
Lot 18, Concession IX, Erin Township, Wellington County
This cemetery stands on a height of land on the west side of County Road #23, overlooking the Town of Erin to the south. The land was originally owned by Donald McMillan, who donated it for a cemetery. Previously there had been a school there until other schools were built in the area and it was discontinued in 1837.
The cemetery gradually fell into disrepair and several efforts were made to restore it. Extensive repairs were made in 1941, 1959 and 1963. It is now, very well maintained by a group of interested volunteers.

Memorial Plaque
Formerly called the McMillan Cemetery after the family who donated the land, it was in use from 1834 to 1935. Here are buried many of Erin's prominent early residents, including Daniel McMillan, known as the founder of Erin Village. It was also the site of the second school built in Erin Township. This cemetery is being preserved to perpetuate the remembrance of these illustrious pioneers buried here.
Erected in 1980 by the Erin Pioneer Cemetery Board with the assistance of the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Recreation.

St. James Anglican Pioneer Cemetery
the
following description is taken from the "History of Maryborough Township 1851 -
1976"
St. James Cemetery
One of the early burying grounds in the township of Maryborough was established
by the congregation of St. James Anglican Church at the time they erected their
first church on the northern outskirts of the village of Rothsay.
For many years St. James Cemetery has been unused. Today the many tombstones
dating back to as early as the year 1858 have been placed in a cairn by the
roadside as a fitting memorial to many of the brave and courageous men and women
who settled the area many years ago.

Medill Cemetery
and
St. John's
Cemetery
These two cemeteries were combined are located just outside Moorefield. There is no marker at the site to explain what the name of the cemetery was. The following descriptions are taken from the "History of Maryborough Township 1851 - 1976"
The
Medill Cemetery
In the year 1853, William and Joseph Medill built a small Baptist Church on
their farms, Lot 14, Con. 9 of Maryborough and established a cemetery in the
churchyard.
Both William and Joseph Medill were active in Municipal affairs. William was a
member of the first township council, holding the office of reeve and deputy
reeve. Joseph was the township treasurer for approximately thirty years.
For many years the small burying groun lay in a neglected state. In 1970 the
headstones were moved and relocated in St. John Anglican cemetery on the 8th
Concession. Today the Medill Cemetery is unmarked and uncared for.
St. Johns Cemetery
St. Johns Cemetery was established by the Anglican Church on the eastern corner
of Lot 10 on the 8th concession, on land deeded to the Bishop of Niagara by John
King who at the time of his death in 1861 was buried in the cemetery.
The tombstone of Mrs. Francis Morgan, the mother of twelve children, died at the
age of thirty-seven in the year 1860.
In 1970 the tombstones of St. Johns Cemetery, combined with stones moved from
the Medill burying ground, were arranged to form a memorial cairn.

Ten graves are known to exist in this cemetery.

Ponsonby Cemetery
I took the two pictures April 21, 2001, as part of our family reunion activities. The dedication marker faces the highway, i.e., I was standing near the highway and was able to take the view from that location. As you can see, the gathered stones are collected into a concrete, slanted base to the right of the dedication marker as viewed from the road. I took a picture of the only stone that seemed to relate to my family. It did not occur to me that I might run across your fine site. The wording on the stone is as follows:
William J. / Son of / GEORGE & MARY ANN / ARISS(.) / died / Mar. 17, 1877; / Aged 4 Yr's 10 / Mo's & 16 Dy's / We loved this little one / And would have wished him stay. / But let our Father's will be done; / He shines in endless day. / WATSON & LAMBERT ELORA
Please contact Jim Ariss if you have ARISS connections at [email protected]
Additional information:
...As Sue
and I found some of the stones to be in poor condition, while others were in
remarkably good condition, we found it necessary to supplement our recording of
the etchings on the stone with information from "BRANCH NOTES, Volume VIII,
Number 2, of the Waterloo-Wellington Branch of O.G.S."
The additional information was contained in an article from those "BRANCH
NOTES" submitted by my 4th cousin, Marjorie Ruth Dow, nee Martin. Marjorie's
article was titled: "Monumental Inscriptions Ponsonby Cemetery". She notes the
location of the cemetery as "Lot 1 Concession VI On Elora Road north of Marden,
being the township line between Nichol and Pilkington Townships. Ponsonby was a
preaching point on the Bethany Circuit (Pilkington Township) of the Wesleyan
Methodist Church, now United Church of Canada. Bethany is aligned with the
Elora Pastoral Charge of the U.C.C." Marjorie further notes the usage of the
original cemetery to be from 1843 to 1890 and that her data was recorded in
1979.
As the "first" stone had survived as separate pieces, Marjorie observes:
"(Note: Stone badly weathered in 1979 -- wording provided by Mrs. Maisie
(Clifford) HOWSE, Ariss, Ontario, who copied same in 1966.)
