Fordwich Presbyterian Cemetery
The Fordwich Presbyterian Cemetery was established in the 1860s. The two acres on which it is located was also the site of the first Church and shed. The most common names in the cemetery are Hutchison, Walker, Giles, Wilson, Mc Clement, Gibson and Hamilton.
The cemetery was closed in 1975.
In 1993 the tombstones were placed in an attractive arrangement at the brow of the hill on the property, facing the Maitland River. The headstones were polished, repaired and set in a concrete pad, close to the location of the original church.
The cemetery is located on the corner of Alfred & Patrick Streets.

Harrison Family Plot Concession 17 Lot 18
The Harrison Family was saddened in 1872 when their little three year old daughter Lydia passed away. She was born in September 1869 and died March 18, 1872. Two years later her older sister went to join her. Kathleen Victoria was born October 17, 1867 and died November 10, 1874.
A peony bush has long marked the graves on the children on the knoll . Lydia and Kathleen were the children of George Harrison and his wife, Christena Peer.

"The story: (as reported by family members) Russell Hayden remembered there had been a cemetery on that property because as a boy he had crossed the field going to school and seen it; he grew up on the old farm not far from it. Since he knew the location, we went in search of it. The farmer who owned the land in 1982 (or a farmer before him, I forget which) had plowed all the stones into a corner so he could farm that acre of land, and the brush grew over them. There was no one to complain at the time. We just dug them up and laid them out and transcribed them." The people in the photos : In the older pictures of the Hayden Cemetery, these are the people: Third picture: (second picture, second row): me, and Phyllis Hayden Fourth picture (first picture, third row): Russell Hayden, me, Phyllis Hayden, Bob Hayden (and Bob's son/daughter Alex/Stacey--Fifth picture (second picture, third row): me, Phyllis Hayden, Russell Hayden, Phyllis and Russell are husband and wife; Bob is their nephew. The Hayden Cemetery was on land donated by John Hayden. His younger son was William; William's son was Thomas, and Russell is Thomas' son. Russell, Phyllis, and I had to unearth the stones from the corner of the farm, where they'd been dumped.
Names of those buried in the Hayden’s Wesleyan Methodist Cemetery, Concession 2 Lot 14 are: COOK, GRASLEY, HUSBAND, JACKSON, LAMBKIN, ROWE, SELF and SHEPHARD

Howick Pioneer Evangelical Lutheran (Abandoned)
In 1887 Christian Killinger and his wife Elizabeth sold one quarter of an acre of the lot to the trustees of the Evangelical Congregation for a burial ground on June 15, 1887.
Family names of those who attended the EV Church were: Angst, Behrns, Detrich,French, Hartung, Kaufman, Killinger, Klein, Koch Kreuger, Philips, Reidt and Schultz. As with many cemeteries , there were burials before the cemetery was official opened.
Many of the bodies were removed later to the Clifford Public Cemetery so only a few stones remain in the north west corner of the farm.

Old Hunter Cemetery - Con. 9, Lot 13
An acre of land was sold to the Wesleyan Methodist Church on May 23, 1863 for the sum of $1.00 by Mathew Hunter. Church trustees at that time were: George Green, Henry Gough, Alexander Crawford , John Elliott and Mathew Hunter. On September 21, 1882 the church and cemetery were transferred to the Gorrie circuit. This little plot on the brow of a hill on highway #87 marks the resting place of some of the first settlers in Howick Township.

Old Sotheran Cemetery - Con. 6, Lot 19
To find this cemetery turn right at the Fordwich Tire Store, go over the small bridge and up on your left side is where the cemetery is located. This cemetery was used by the people of the surrounding area, but the land was never deed over as a cemetery so it is still part of the farm. Old Sotheran is claimed to be the oldest cemetery in Howick Township. Some of the tombstones came from Italy. In 1956 the cemetery was fixed up and a cairn was erected with the stones collected and place on a cement pad. Surnames of those buried are: Mills, Gilkson, Southern, Carter, Driver, Kenney, McKinzey, Dowling, Ryers, Kernaham, Walker, Sweetman and Foster.

Pioneer : Baptist Cemetery - Con. 3, Lot 23
On June 16, 1875, less than an acre of land in the south west angle were purchased by the First Regular Baptist church for a site of a church and burial ground.
The Church was built about 1865 on Concession 2 and in 1904 the new brick Church replaced the original structure. By 1944, the membership was small, the Church closed and sold. The material was used to build a Church in Fergus
Most of the tombstones were moved to the Fordwich Cemetery.
Mr. Gibson worked hard to clean up and maintain the cemetery. Later on the cemetery pad was poured and the stones placed upon it.

Porterfield Cemetery - Con. 13, Lot 31
The cemetery was closed a number of years ago with with most of the remains reinterred in the Clifford Public Cemetery. This past summer (2002) the Township of Howick restored the former site of the Porterfield Congregational Cemetery placing some tombstones on a pad. "Pioneers gone but not forgotten".

Redgrave Cemetery - Con. 8, Lot 31
Located on highway #87 close to the Minto-Howick Townline, the cemetery is all that remains of village of Redgrave. In 1883 the village of Redgrave had a hotel, blacksmith, post office, general store and an Orange Hall. In 1883 a Congregational Church was built, and there was a Templar Lodge.
Some of the families found in and around Redgrave were: Barr, Harding, Johnston, Douglas, Pritchard, Walker, Brown, Henry, McFarlin, Jackson, Clark, Fallis, McKenzie, Montgomery, Witner, Fennel, Allan, Yoe, Nelson, Stevenson, Campbell, Wolfe, Bacon, McLauglin, McDermitt, Simpson, and Dickert.
In 1874 an acre of land was granted to use as a cemetery. It would be in 1967 a grant was made available and the cemetery was restored with a fitting plaque to remember the pioneers of Howick township.

Wroxeter Anglican Cemetery - Con. B, Lot 27
This cemetery had many bodies removed to the Wroxeter Public Cemetery and in the early 1960's Rev. Vogan requested the Township of Howick to take over the cemetery.
This picture is of the Wroxeter Anglican cemetery which I took about 1980 before we transcribed the stones, before the stones were lifted and the cemetery "restored." (Thanks to Carol Marcelle for the photo)

In 1986 the Howick Township Council apply for a government grant to clean out and rebuild the cemetery.
