King Lake Cemetery

From the 4 corners in Glen Meyer travel directly west until the paved road dead ends at a gorge; turn left and head south on the North Road - yes south - for about 1 km; on the right will be a little cemetery surrounded by a grove of pines.  It was formerly a Methodist/United cemetery but the church has ceased to exist. This is an old cemetery & really not active any more.

Walsingham Township

Glen Meyer Baptist Cemetery

Glen Meyer Cemetery is on Concession Road #14 (former name) east of the village of GM in Walsingham Tp, Norfolk County.  To find the village & cemetery, take County Road 59 (formerly Hwy #59) from Courtland (#3 Hwy) to Langton heading south towards Lake Erie.  Just before Langton is "Andys Corners", turn right there onto a paved road - the 14th Concession - and proceed west.  As you approach Glen Meyer, the Baptist Church with its little cemetery will be on the south side (or left side) of the Road.

Marston Cemetery

Proceeding to the Marston Cemetery: leaving Glen Meyer Cemetery & heading west on the 14th Conc Rd a short distance, turn left at the 4 corners in Glen Meyer and drive south on that highway (townline between Walsingham & Houghton) until you reach the 10th Concession Road, turn left and drive down that country road about 1-2 km to find the Marston Cemetery in a field on the left.  The King Plot is near the driveway about halfway along.

Ida A (w/o W. W. KING) 08-Oct-1903 Joseph W. KING 08-Mar-1945 Ross (s/o J.W. & I. A. KING) 01-Oct-1901

(Lila & Ida were daughters of Wm Kelly and his first wife Eliza.  Ida married twice, first to Dennis McCaffrey & then to Joseph King; Ross was their 2nd child. Also, buried with Dennis in Glen Meyer is a daughter Ethel who died as an infant - this one is a little hard to read.)

Woodhouse Township

Doan's Hallow Cemetery

It is one of the oldest - and the most fascinating - of Norfolk County cemeteries located in Woodhouse Township.  Most of the stones have been set in two long straight rows or in a concrete rectangle in front of the two rows.  This is believed to have been done in the late 50s or early 60s, for purposes of safeguarding the stones from vandalism and facilitating the upkeep of the land.

The black and white photo of the cemetery was taken ca. 1920 1940 and shows the "witches gate" to the left.  The other b & w is of a painting by W. Edgar Cantelon, entitled "The Wooden Monument", at Doan's Hollow, is over the grave of a German carpenter, born 1767, died 1839.  He is said to have fashioned the white oak slab and cear cribbing for his own grave.  These photos are in the collection of the N.H.S.

At the entrance to the cemetery, the tall iron fence opens with a swinging gate of tall rectangular frameworks of iron - rather like the principle of a revolving door in a modern store.  Witches were said to be unable to turn square corners.

One of the pioneer settlers in the area was one of the early donors of property to set up the burying ground.  On the stone erected for William Park, who died in 1830 at the age of 66 years, the following inscription was added:  "This ground was given by Capt. Wm. Park for a public Burial: 1798."

Another article relates a variety of interesting recollections by Mrs. Charles Toms on the Doan family and the area known as Doan's Hollow.  (now in the NHS scrapbook #24)  On the subject of her grandfather, Elijah Doan, the pioneer settler of the district (lived) 1783-1865, sone of Jonathan doan of Pennsylvania), she says:  "Grandfather died at the close of the Civil War .His body rested for many years in the small graveyard at the northwest corner of the farm.  This reservation was presented by William Park and the Walkers to the public as a burying ground in 1800, before Grandfather bought the farm.  Grandfather's body was removed in 1880 to the Port Dover Cemetery and rests beside the grave of Grandmother...."

Mrs. Toms' recollections continue with:  "The first school-house, built of logs, was near the graveyard....The second school building was erected in the graveyard and it was also used as a church."

It is not likely that all of the tombstones survived and of course there were likely many buried there without markers.   The one picture of a stone is that of Thomas Bowlby, a cousin of mine 7 times removed.  His cousin, my 6th ggrandfather, John Bowlby and his wife Rachel (Swayze) farmed not to far from here.

The cemetery is located on St. John's Church Road, (that is the church I sent a picture of along with it's cemetery) just north of the Blue Line Road.  This church was originally a Methodist Church founded in 1800, of which, Rachel & John Bowlby were early members and are more like buried here than in Doan's Hollow as they were Methodist.   There are a number of Bowlby's buried here along with other distant relatives of the Smith and Boughner lines.  As an added personal note, there are some beautiful Mulberry trees in the cemetery and we left with fewer berries on the trees.

The above notes are just a brief transcript of the notes I was able to copy from books at the historical and archives in Simcoe.

Thanks to Gordon Harris for the information and photos. Very interesting!!!
