Fleming Cemetery
In order to be able to photograph this cemetery, we had to promise the gentleman who owns the land on which it is located, not to reveal its location. There appears to be 12 graves, all are illegible or nearly so and many are crumbling or broken or partially sunken into the earth as to hide part of the inscription. Some are in too many pieces to ever know who they belong to. The cemetery is fenced off from surrounding fields and sits high, overlooking lower ground to the east. To the best of my ability, these are the people whose stones are still readable. I have discovered this cemetery high above the Thames River is the final resting place of Aldborough's first settler, James Fleming, an Irishman with his wife, Barbara - who were possibly the first white settlers within many miles around. He was granted the land he farmed for services rendered while in the employ of Col. Thomas Talbot and Sir John Graves Simcoe.

Large, 4 sided and most elaborate grave marker is pitted and wording badly
eroded. West side is blank. / South facing: Charles E or G FLEMING died June 14, 1856. 23 years, 3 months, 8 days. / East face: James FLEMING died June 18, 1848 age 32 years. / North face: Ann GIBB wife of James FLEMING died January 18, 1868. 55 years, 6 months, 28 days. James FLEMING died Sept 18 1838 - can't be certain of 3rd. number but looks like a 3. Possibly an 8. His wife: looks like Elsa BURL _ IRT died September 1863 their child name illegible 1 month 21 days. Peter died Jan 23 1829 (everything else too worn to read) PIERCE (can't read first name) died Oct 27 age 3 months Malcolm M son of John & Barbara Pierce died Feb 25, 1861 Hannah Rebecca daughter of John & Barbara (assuming last name is PIERCE) died Jan 21, 1862 age 4 years, 1 month |

Old #3 Highway between Wallacetown and Eagle, Elgin Co., Ontario on right side of highway going west. The wide view of the cemetery is from the 'new' entrance which allows for safer exiting from the grounds.

McColl's Cemetery
McColls Cemetery est. 1822 - Talbot Trail (formerly #3 Highway) - Elgin County, Ontario

There are two cemeteries at this site; McColls proper and a second tiny burial ground comprised of 7 or 8 gravestones and in spite of the McColls buried here, there is a separate name for this little cemetery. They are divided by a small ravine through which Brock's Creek trickles. Because the immediate area is heavily wooded with an unmarked lane leading off the old #3 Highway, the cemetery is remarkably quiet and serene. Sounds of passing traffic is muffled to such an extent, you'd think you were far away from a busy thoroughfare. A convenient bench just inside the gate is a nice place to sit and reflect.

McIntyre Cemetery
This is a very small family cemetery overlooking busy highway #3 in Elgin county between Eagle and New Glasgow, Ontario in a farmer's field. There is in total, 8 gravestones and with the exception of the first small marker, all inscriptions are in very good condition and easily read. There seems to be 9 burials with no way of telling if there were other graves or not. These grave markers have obviously been removed from their original sites and imbedded upright in concrete.

Guysboro United Church 1864 - 1971 In memory of Guysboro United Church which was the worship centre of many of the pioneers who are buried in this cemetery. The original building was built of white pine of this region by the Wesleyan Methodist Church of the New Connexion. The building stood on the south side of Talbot Road about one mile east of here. |

Sim-Martin Cemetery
At the 4 corners at Kinglake (heading south) turn right and, heading west, take
this winding paved road for about 2 kms; it will cross the County Road (first
road you come to) between Norfolk County & Elgin County. The S-M cemetery is
about 1/2 km across the county line, on the right, up on a knoll in a grove of
maples. The cemetery is part of a farmer's field. This is a v-e-r-y old
pioneer cemetery, probably the first in the area.

Black's Cemetery overlooks the Talbot Trail (highway #3) from a vantage point upon a small hill on right side of the road, west out of Wallacetown in Elgin county, Ontario. It is easy to miss the unmarked entrance to the cemetery. Going west, it is a dirt laneway on the right at the bottom of the hill winding up to the cemetery. The tallest monuments can be seen coming from the west more easily than coming from Wallacetown.

Kerr Cemetery
High on hill approximately 1/2 mile from Thames River (Tait's Bridge now gone) almost at corner of Coyne Road and Thamesview Rd., in Dunwich Twp., Elgin Co.
Gravestones have been removed from original burial sites and placed together on a cement pad and can easily be seen from gravel road that fronts the cemetery. Photographs do not show all stones & names that are on site. Situated north of Dutton, Ontario.

Largie Cemetery
Only a few stones remain to commemorate this small roadside cemetery found near the junction of Duff Line and Largie Road, Dunwich township, Elgin County. Largie church is within site, perhaps 1/4 mile distance, and presumably belongs to this little burial ground to be found north of Dutton, Ontario. I was not able to photograph all that is left of the cemetery this day.

Lumley Cemetery
Tiny cemetery containing fewer than 12 burials by grave stone count and places stones are obviously gone. Lumley's & Willson's buried here. Located on the right side of road going south from Iona, overlooking tartop road formerly known as the Townline dividing Southwold and Dunwich townships, approximately 2 - 2.5 miles south of Iona in Elgin county, Ontario.

McKenzie Cemetery
The cemetery is completely absorbed into the surrounding woods, although the growth is somewhat smaller than the woods generally, suggesting to me that it was cleared perhaps 20-25 years ago, and subsequently re-absorbed back into the woods. There is even a remnant of a sign on the surrounding Frost wire fence. There are a couple of photos showing the woods from the nearest road, and a couple showing the Thames River through the spring woods from the height of land upon which the cemetery sits. The cemetery is located in Concession A, Broken Front, Lot 5, Dunwich County. It is located by a ravine near the river, on the north side of the McKenzie Line.

St. Peter Cemetery
|
St. Peter’s Church 1827 A fine example of early Gothic Revival architecture, this Anglican church lies in the midst of the original “Talbot Settlement”. The nave is erected by the congregation in 1827. The belfy and tower, added in 1845 to accommodate a bell donated by the Earl of Galloway, adhered to the original style. In 1849 Bishop John Strachan consecrated the church, and two years later the Reverend James Stewart became first resident priest of the parish. Charlotte Simcoe, a daughter of the province’s first lieutenant-governor, gave St. Peter’s a silver communion service in 1844. The nearby burying grounds contains the graves of some of the area’s earliest settlers, including that of Col. Thomas Talbot, found of the “Talbot Settlement”. |
St. Peter’s Anglican Church & Cemetery - Lakeview Line
St. Peter's Anglican Cemetery and Church are among the oldest in this part of Ontario, the cemetery being the final resting place of Col. Thomas Talbot. Col. Talbot is responsible for the settling of surrounding townships and distribution of lands as early as 1803. The cemetery is situated high over Lake Erie upon a long, narrow, gently rolling stretch of ground almost directly across from the church. To find the cemetery, travel south from Wallacetown on the Talbot Trail (formerly #3 highway) and stay on the Tartop Road as far as it goes then turn left onto Lakeview Line.. You will come to the Backus-Page house museum first, on the left; then the church manse and St. Peter's Church also on the left side with the cemetery on the right fronted with white picket fence and large sign stating it is St. Peter's Cemetery.

Tyrconnell Cemetery
Tyrconnel Cemetery - Lakeview Line
To reach this small cemetery, travel to Wallacetown, Elgin county, on the Talbot Trail (formerly #3 highway) and turn south at the caution light. Stay on this road and drive as far as you can. Turn right onto Lakeview Line and follow this gravel road a few kilometers watching for the posted cemetery sign. It is set a little off the road but the grass is kept cut and so is easily seen. The cemetery itself is long and narrow with one central lane. There is only a few miles separating this cemetery and St. Peter's Anglican cemetery.

Union Cemetery
This cemetery is located in Union, Ontario just south of St. Thomas. It's a beautiful and well taken care of cemetery. This cemetery is still active and holds some of my relations that I'm researching. I would like to take time to say my special thanks to the late Norma Smith, and to her husband Lloyd who were so helpful when I visited with them in November, 2003.
