Peter BISCHOFF
b Dec 14 1821
d Feb 21 1908

This is not his original stone, but was erected years later by his grandchildren. Peter was born in Switzerland, and was an early settler in the Amazonia area. His wife, Margarithe (Gertsch) Bischoff, is also buried there, but her name was not listed on the large stone.
The original tombstone of Peter Bischoff (left) has no dates or name, only the word "Father," but it is located in a line of Bischoff stones. This family were members of the then German Reformed Church (now St. John's Church of Christ).

This is the tombstone of Celia Bischoff (also Bishop) at the St. John's Church Cemetery in Amazonia. Celia was one of the five children of Peter and Margarithe (Gertsch) Bischoff to die young of tuberculosis. Though the young people did not all die in the same year, it appears that there tombstones were all made at the same time, and this has led to some probable errors in the dates.

This is the tombstone of Anna Bischoff, one of the daughters of Peter and Margarithe (Gertsch) Bischoff to die young of tuberculosis. When we photographed this stone in the St. John's Church cemetery in Amazonia in 1999, the top half was broken off and mostly buried in the ground, so we dug it up for the photograph.

Years ago, probably in the 1970s, there was a fifth stone at this site, for Emil (or Emmett), but it is no longer in the cemetery at all.
