From Andrew County School Report, June 30, 1911, (re-published by the Andrew Co. Historical Society some years ago), no page numbers:
"District 32, Mt. Calvary, formerly 'Heron' district or 'Brush Africa.' Brush Africa was constructed of logs very rude, surrounded by brush. Roads were in fair condition. Mt. Calvary district the eastern half of Brush Africa, built in 1867 on land deeded by Nathaniel Kellogg, cost about $1400. The schoolboard [sic] at that time was Ezra Kellogg, John Kellogg. The first teacher taught in this building was Aaron Bales, salary then about the same as now [1911], enrollment about 40. There has [been] about 40 teachers taught in this building, no library, good wall maps, good blackboard, poor recitation seats in present building, school grounds, out buildings fair condition. My birthplace is near Rosendale. I received my education at rural school and Maryville Normal. Lola Miller, Teacher." Further, Mt. Calvary was part of School District 10, centered at Rosendale, Andrew Co., MO. I see that Nora Ethel Brown's mother was a Kellogg (correct me if I'm wrong), so that's probably how she was connected to the area and to the school.
