This site is dedicated
to the memory of David Watt Torrance M.D., O.B.E. "The Galilee Doctor".
David Torrance was a Christian medical missionary born in 1862 in Airdrie,
Lanarkshire, Scotland. He opened the first "modern" hospital in Tiberias,
Palestine in 1894. For the next 30 years he dedicated his life to
providing medical care and spiritual guidance to the inhabitants of one
of the most remote regions of the middle east at that time. He lost
two wives and several children to disease in this hostile environment and
died himself in 1923 in Safed, Palestine. He is buried under a granite
Iona cross in the garden of his beloved hospital on the shores of the Sea
of Galilee.
Though scorned and spat upon when he first arrived in Tiberias, through
his faith and kindness, he earned the admiration of all. At
the time of his death he was "counted by the majority ... as a Hassid
, or saintly one."
