 J. E. Baley enlisted 17 April 1862 in Trenton, Miss., in Capt. S. R. Sheppard's Company (Singleton Guards) 6 Batt'n Mississippi Volunteers.

They became the 46th Regiment Miss Inf.

According to the card below, he signed up for 12 months. But according to the document below, written by Capt Heslep, Baley was due a bounty, and this may have been paid for re-enlisting.

Note spelling of his last name on his cards.

He was wounded at Vicksburg. He died after the surrender of 4 July 1863. See two cards below.

 
 

 
 
 
Final statement of pay and clothing account of Private J. E. Baley, Co. G, Miss Regt.

I certify that within named J. E. Baley ---  born in Lexington District in the State of North Carolina Aged thirty-two years Six feet high, Fair complexion Blue eyes Light colored hair and by occupation a farmer was enlisted by Capt S R Sheppard at Trenton Smith County Mississippi on the 17th day of March 1862 to serve three years or the war.

He died in the Brigade Hospital at Vicksburg the 6th day of July 1863.

His effects were lost during the siege of Vicksburg.

Given in duplicate at Mobile Alabama January 28 1864.

Memorial Service Held for Pvt. Jesse E. Bailey
 

On 29 Sep 2017, a memorial service was held for Pvt. Jesse E. Bailey at Soldiers Rest in Vicksburg, Miss. It was hosted by the Sons of Confederate Veterans Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton Camp #1354.

SCV members participated in the Memorial Service.

 

Pvt. Bailey was a soldier in the 46th Mississippi Infantry, Co. G, Singleton Guards, which was "mentioned by Gen. Pemberton as one of the commands entitled to the highest distinction in the defeat of Sherman at the battle of Chickasaw Bayou Dec. 1862."

At the memorial service, taps was played.
