The Hicks Brothers - by Commander Edward Campbell

Three Confederate Heroes - The Sons of Dr. Benjamin I Hicks and Martha Cowan Hicks
 

Brother # 1. William Alexander Hicks was attending the United States Naval Academy with two months to go till graduation, when the Civil War broke out. He immediately resigned, returned home to Vicksburg and joined the Confederate States Navy. He was immediately sent to Mobile and joined Admiral Semmes and his adventures. He was sent on a prize (ship) to the Confederate Government. He was captured and soon paroled. He was then sent to Memphis. Just before Memphis fell, he was on the CSS National that towed the hull of the unfinished CSS Arkansas down the Mississippi River and up to Yazoo City. He was on the CSS Arkansas when it came out and did battle with the Union Fleet before Vicksburg. After the CSS Arkansas sank near Baton Rouge, he made his escape and returned to Yazoo City. He was killed when the CSS National Exploded near Liverpool in 1862. He has a memorial stone in the family lot.

Brother # 2. Benjamin I Hicks, Jr., was with his uncle in Cowan’s Battery, which was a part of the 1st Mississippi Light Artillery at Vicksburg, and was later in the Atlanta Campaign. He survived the war and returned to Vicksburg. He died of hydrophobia or rabies in 1871. He is buried in the family lot.

Brother # 3. John R Hicks joined the 21st Regiment Mississippi Volunteers at the beginning of the war. He was a surgeon. He became ill, resigned is commission, and died in 1862. He was buried in the family lot.
