"I will searve my time if it cost my life."

The compiled service records for Edwin Josiah Benton and his brother Lafayette J. Benton were for all purposes identical, as shown here. They enlisted and mustered in the same regiment, in the same company, at the same time, both in New Orleans for a period of twelve months. In Sep and Oct 1861, they served as hospital attendants before returning to their unit. They continued serving into 1863, taking part in the defense of Vicksburg.

According to the record shown here, they died on the same day, 9 Jun 1863. Just over 150 years later, they with their descendants would have a memorial service together. (See farther below)

Private E. J. Benton and Private L. J. Benton enlisted in Capt. John P. Viglini's Company (Pelican Rifles), 3 Reg't Louisiana Infantry. (See next cards)

Capt. Viglini's Pelican Rifles became the 3rd Regt. Louisiana Infantry.

At some time during the spring of 1862,  the.Benton brothers must have re-enlisted, as his original twelve months would have been up in April of 1862.

Company K of the 3 La. Inf. was formed 8 May 1862, about the time that the Bentons
would have re-enlisted.

Pvt. E. J. Benton and Pvt. L. J. Benton are noted on a list of casualties of Hebert's Brigade at the siege of Vicksburg, Miss., 17 May to 4 July 1863. The death date for both is given as 8 Jun 1863, "in trenches." Often, personal diaries give
us more information, such as that of William Tunnard who was present when Lafayette Benton died. (See below)
