He was a student, age 16, when he enlisted in the 21st Miss. Inf., Co. H, on 4 Mar 1862 at Bovina. He gave his residence as Vicksburg and his marital status as single. On 1 Jan 1864, he was promoted to 3rd Corp. He took part in these engagements: Seven Pines Savage Station Malvern Hill Maryland Heights Sharpsburg Bombardment of Fredericksburg 11 Dec 1862 (wounded) Battle of Fredericksburg 3 May 1863 Gettysburg Skirmish at Chester Gap Chickamauga Knoxville Bean Station Wilderness Spottsylvania Court House Cold Harbor in the trenches 1-13 Jun 1864 Petersburg in the trenches 16-23 1864 Berryville On a role of POW at the end of war, he is shown as paroled at Jackson, Miss., 19 May 1865.
