John R. Hicks
Born Nov 18, 1839
Died Oct. 7, 1878

My husband

John R. Hicks served in the 1st Military Lt Arty.

He was captured at Blakely, Ala., on 9 Apr 1865 and sent to Ship Island as a prisoner of war. He was received there 15 Apr.

On 1 May 1865, he was transferred to Vicksburg for exchange that occurred at Camp Townsend on 6 May 1865.

See Rosters and History of the Civil War Prison Ship Island, Mississippi by Theresa Arnold-Scriber and Terry G. Scriber, 2008.

Cowan's Battery was Co. G of 1st Miss Lt Arty, made up mostly of Warren Co., Miss., men. (It is interesting to note there may be a family relationship here as Hicks' mother's name was Cowan.)

His transfer to Vicksburg was 1 May 1865.

He was probably paroled soon after.
