Hanes, J. W., Pvt., b. 1834, Warren Co.; d. 6 Nov 1912; 9th Miss.
Inf., Co. K; enlisted 22 Feb 1862 at Hernando. Company muster roll for July and
Aug 1863 marked “Present. In arrest.” Deserted 15 Sep 1863. Captured 19 Nov 1863
at Hernando, Miss., by 7th Tenn. Cav. A note on his capture report
reads, “Says he is a Private but wearing officers uniform.” Sent to Alton 10 Dec
1863 then to Fort Delaware (received there 8 Apr 1864. On an oath of allegiance
to the U.S. given in May 1865, he gives his place of residence as DeSota Co.,
Miss., and is described as having a fair complexion, fair hair, gray eyes, and
as being six ft in height. He was released 11 May 1865.
