George Ernwine was b. 1839, France; d. 1913; and signed on with the 12th Miss. Inf., Co. E (Capt. Horace H. Miller’s Co., Vicksburg Sharpshooters). His name in his service record on fold3.com is see also as George Yenwine, Ernwine, and Yennin. He enrolled 10 May 1861 at Corinth, having traveled 345 miles to rendezvous. Enlisted 24 Apr 1862 at Vicksburg. he was a POW at Point Lookout, Md., having been captured 5 Apr 1865 at Petersburg (Ft. Gregg, Va.); he was released 11 Jun 1865 after subscribing and swearing to an Oath of Allegiance to the U.S. In this oath, he was described as residing in Vicksburg, being of light complexion, having brown hair and hazel eyes, and being 5 ft 2 in tall. He was wounded in the engagements before Richmond, Va., 26 Jun to 1 Jul 1862. According to his pay statement of spring 1862, Pvt. Ernwine was receiving $11.00 a month.
