On the 19th Ark Inf, Co. F, muster roll of 1 Mar through 30 Jun 1862, he is marked absent because he was detailed to Banes/Baynes Battalion as a sharp shooter, where he appears to have remained. His rank becomes Sergeant in the 12th Battalion Arkansas Sharp Shooters.

He was captured at Ripley 4 Oct 1862 (another record says 8 Oct 1862).

Prisoner at Corinth. List dated 13 Oct 1862.

On 15 Oct 1862, he was on the list of missing of Cabell's Brigade in the battles of Corinth and Hatchie Bridge, 3 to 5 Oct 1862.

In Jan & Feb 1863, he was taken prisoner at Corinth and was a hospital nurse at Iuka.

He was rec'd Feb 1863 at Gratiot Street Prison, St. Louis, Mo., and appears on a monthly report for 1 Feb through 28 Feb 1863, and on the Roll of Prisoners of War received and discharged from Gratiot Street Prison from 15 through 30 Apr 1863.

On 6 Feb 1863, he was forwarded from Iuka Hospital near Corinth, Miss., to Memphis, Tenn., for exchange.

He took part defending Vicksburg. On 11 Jun 1863, he was taken to the Van Buren (Conval.) U.S.A. General Hospital at Millikens Bend, La., with a gunshot wound and fracture in his left side. He died there 4 Aug 1863 from congestion and chills.

The body of Brantley was mistakenly included with the remains of the Union soldiers who were later taken from their wartime burial sites to the U.S. National Cemetery in Vicksburg for re-interment.

This also happened to Pvt. Reuben H. White of 19th Tex Inf. and Robert T. Skelton of 37th Miss.
