Jan writes..."[The lighthouse is] at Isla Mujeres (Island of Women) near Cancun, Q. Roo, Mexico. I don't know whether or not it's a working lighthouse but it probably is. Isla Mujeres reputedly was a hangout for pirates in bygone days. Today replicas of pirate ships cruise between Cancun and Isla Mujeres on day trips." Legend has it that 17th-century pirates used the island as a safe home for their women when the men were at sea. However, some people believe it to be a sacred Mayan retreat, possibly for virgin girls.
