Hunting Island Lighthouse, Second View

Located in the Hunting Island State Park in Beaufort County, SC, this is South Carolina's only lighthouse open to the public. The original lighthouse was built in 1859. This lighthouse, built in "bolt-on" sections for easy disassembly, was finished in 1875 and moved further inland in 1889. The lighthouse was decommissioned on June 16, 1933.

Virginia writes..."it was moved to its present location from an area on the island where there was major beach erosion. it's in the state park,---really beautiful area because it hasn't been developed and there is a wonderful forest of (mostly) different kinds of palms that you have to drive through before you get to the lighthouse/beach area. Seems like I read on a sign that the building is metal and is bolted together."
