Scholey & Schooley A VERIFIABLE POTTED HISTORY
Although the name can be found much farther back in time it is CURRENTLY only possible to trace continuous lines on either side of the Atlantic as far back as the 1500s
Names prior to that include:
Ricardus de Scoleio Manuscripts Year 1198, The Norman People
Richard Scholey of Co Yorks. Registered at Oxford University 1379
Johannes de Scoley PT Yorks 1379
By the 1500s the family were firmly established in both Lincolnshire and in Yorkshire and in 1441 a William Scolaye of Horncastle Lincolnshire had expressed in his will a desire to be interred in the Chantry of Hemsworth Church. Yorkshire
At this point the American Schooleys should be recalling that one of the original migrants to America Robert Scholey (Schooley) was born in Hemsworth
The Scholeys and Hemsworth Church were firmly connected, Hunters History of South Yorkshire lists the Rectors of Hemsworth and gives John Scolaye as being the Church Patron and on 24th May 1506 he became Incumbent of the Chantry of St Thomas of Hemsworth
This John Scolaye should be regarded as GENERATION 1 of what follows, the chances are that nearly everyone out there fits in somewhere on or closely linked to the line which follows
