We
had many opportunities to know some of the prisoners personally when
we lived in the little town of San Quentin. This situation was so
commonplace that we just took it for granted. To us, they were much
like other adults that we knew. Some of them were notorious because
of their life before they were sent to prison, and because of the
notoriety attached to their crime and conviction.
