You may also want to email us with the names of those names from the county that you are researching where they can be listed on the Mercer County Surname Project. All information that is provided will aid others in finding lost relatives and help you make contacts that may result in another line or two. Good luck in your search and be sure to check back often, as additional information will be added as it becomes available.

Mercer County was organized on February 14, 1845, from Grundy County, and named after John Francis Mercer, Revolutionary War General. The County Seat is Princeton, and the Courthouse burned on March 24, 1898. Mercer County is divided into nine Townships named Harrison, Lindley, Madison, Marion, Medicine, Morgan, Ravanna, Somerset and Washington. The Mercer County Township Map can be found here. The County is bounded on the north by the State of Iowa, namely Wayne and Decatur Counties, east by Putnam and Sullivan Counties, south by Grundy County, and west by Harrison County. Note: Mercer was created from Grundy County in 1845, Grundy was created from Livingston County in 1841, therefore, when looking at the 1830 & 1840 Censuses, you must search in Livingston County.
