General Notes: David purchased land May 10, 1760 in Halifax County, Virginia from William Byrd in the amount of 340 acres on Winns Creek. He appears to have moved to Pittsylvania County, Virginia around 1767 and in 1770 bought 1500 acres in that county on Pigg River at Glade and Rocky Creeks, which is today
in Franklin County. During the Revolutionary War, David took the oath of allegiance in Henry County, Virginia on September 13, 1777. Around 1786 or 1787 David moved to Greenville County, South Carolina. By 1800 he was living in Warren County, Kentucky, with his sons Isiah, Asa, Jesse, Samuel,
and Solomon, and his son-in-law Humphrey Scroggins.

General Notes: The Francisco family descended from Peter Francisco of Virginia. He arrived in America under mysterious circumstances which has never been resolved. He was abandoned by a ship's captain at City Point, VA in the year 1765. No one knows his age or where he came from, but his clothing and silver buckle shoes would suggest that he was of a prosperous family, apparently from Portugal and undoubtedly he had been kidnapped. Captain Anthony Winston took him home and cared for him. Anthony Winston lived in Buckingham County, Virginia and became the foster-father of Peter Francisco. Captain Winston was a sheriff of that county, member of the first conventions of 1775, Burgess of that county in 1775 and a
Revolutionary War soldier.Peter Francisco grew up to be a man of enormous size and strength. He was said to have been six feet and six inches in height and to have weighed
260 pounds. He volunteered for service in the Revolutionary War when very young and was noted for a number of single-handed exploits. On the battlefield of Gilford Courthouse there is a monument marking the spot where he killed eleven men in fierce combat. He made many exhibits of his enormous strength and valor that are on record. There is a place in Nottoway County, VA, for example, that marked where he defeated single-handed nine of Tarleton's British dragoons soldiers in July of 1781.Early in the war he complained that the regular swords were not big enough for him and one was specially made at General Washington's
direction over five feet from hilt to point. A massive sword given him by Colonel Mayo is in the Virginia State Library. After the war he served for many years as door-keeper of the House of Delegates.Peter Francisco was married three times. The names of his first wife and
third wife are not known. But his second wife was Katherine Fauntleroy Brooke of Essec County, VA. Their children intermarried with families in Louisa County, Virginia where the name is still remembered.His known children from all three marriages were:

2. Peter Francisco (Junior).
3. Susan Francisco, who married Colonel E. Pescud.
4. Benjamin M. Francisco.
5. Catherine Fauntleroy Francisco.
Peter Francisco (Senior) died 16 January 1831 and was given a military funeral at the Shockoe Cemetery in Richmond, VA.

General Notes: Francis was Judge of the Virginia Court of Appeals at the time of his marriage to Mary Champe Carter. He was the son of Richard Brooke and Ann Hays Taliaferro (Francis of "Epsom," Lawrence, John, Robert), his wife. Judge Brooke was the brother of Dr. Lawrence Brooke, the celebrated surgeon of the Bon Homme Richard, commanded by John Paul Jones; another brother, Robert, was governor of Virginia. Judge Brooke had been previously married to Mary Randolph Spotswood, daughter of General Alexander Spotswood, whose wife was Elizabeth Washington, daughter of William Augustine Washington, the General's full brother, and Anne Aylett, his wife. The home of Judge Brooke was "St.Julian", near Massaponax creek, below Fredericksburg.Judge Brooke stated in his reminiscences that Mr. Jefferson had declared that Mary Champe Carter was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, but that he (Brooke) thought her sister Nancy, "Wife of Governor Troup, of Georgia", was equally beautiful. Nancy Troup is the Ann Williams of the will, which means either that "Williams" was the middle name of Ann Carter, or that she was twice married.

Francis and his older twin John were appointed First Lieutenants in Gen. Harrison's First Continental Regiment of Artillery at the age of 16. They fought in the Virginia campaign. After the battle of Green Spring they were ordered south to join MGen. Nathaniel Greene in the Southern Department not returning to VA until Aug 1782 when they returned home to "Smithfield." "It is generally believed that Washington did not laugh or enjoy a joke. I have often heard judge Francis Taliaferro Brooke, for many years Chief justice of Virginia, say this was not true. Washington often dined at Smithfield, the home of the Brooke family. It is now known in the histories of the battle of Fredericksburg as the "Pratt House." Judge Brooke used to tell of a dinner given to Washington at the Indian Queen Tavern, at which he was present. A British officer sang a comic song, - a very improper song, but as funny as it was improper, - at which Washington laughed till the tears ran down his cheeks, and called upon the singer to repeat it. My father's name was Richard Brooke. He left four sons and a daughter by my mother, and a fifth son by his second wife; he died aged sixty of gout in the stomach, in the year 1792. He was a handsome man (as may be seen by his picture which I have); with great vivacity of spirits; he read much; had a good library of the books of that age. He sent my two eldest brothers, Laurence and Robert, at an early age, to Edinburgh College, where they were educated for the two learned professions, Medicine and Law, and did not return to this country until the revolution had progressed. They got over to France and Dr. Brooke was appointed by Dr. Franklin Surgeon of the "Bon Homme Richard," commanded by the celebrated John Paul Jones, and was in the battle with the Serapis, and all the battles of that memorable cruise.
My brother Robert was captured and carried into New York, and sent back to England by Lord Home, went again to Seotland, again got over to France, and returned to Virgiaia in a French frigate that brought the arms supplied by the French government. He did not remain idle, but joined a volunteer troop of cavalry, under Capt. Larkin Smith; was captured in a charge of dragoons by a Capt. Loller of Simcoe's Queen's Rangers, at Westham, seven miles above Richmond. He was soon exchanged; commenced the practice of law; was a member of the House of Delegates, and, in 1794, was elected Governor of the State, and afterwards Attorney General, in opposition to Bushrod Washington, who was afterwards a Judge of the Supreme Court of the United States. My brother Robert died while Attorney General, in the year 1799. Dr. Brooke died some years after, I do not recollect the year.
In a few days my boots were worn out, and I applied to Gen. Harrison for an order on the quartermaster, for a new pair; he gave me the order but said so scarce were the stores, that unless Gen. Green would endorse the order, I would get no boots-and that I must go to headquarters. I accordingly went; he was quartered in a large wooden building, a mile or more in the rear of the army. The first officer I saw when I got there was his first aid, Maj. Burnet. He asked if I wished to see the General. I said, "Yes, I have some business with the General." On which he desired me to sit down, and he would return to me. Having waited some time, I walked to the other door and saw Gen. Green for the first time, sitting at a table writing. I knew him by his regimentals, and went in. He accosted me, saying, "You belong to the artillery, have you any business with me?" I told him I had an order from Gen. Harrison, for a pair of boots, which I wished him to endorse, or I would not get the boots. Looking at my boots, he said, "You have very good boots." On which I replied, "I borrowed them this morning"; on which he endorsed the order, and I made my bow and left him. He immediately followed me, and overtaking me at the door said: "Lieutenant Brooke, I keep a roster of the officers of the army, and they are invited to dine with me in rotation, and you will be invited in your turn,-but whenever you are off duty Mrs. Green will be glad to see you." This arose from the circumstance that Mrs. Green, on her way to join her husband, passed through my neighborhood, and received some attentions at Smithfield, and New Post the seat of Gen. Alexander Spotswood. I was often at headquarters, on this invitation, and felt I was somewhat a pet of the General's. He was a man of most amiable feelings, and showed me marked kindness on one occasion. Capt. Singleton, who was a great favorite of the General's, commanded the company to which I belonged. We lived in the same marquee, on the most amicable terms, until there was a difference between myself and Lieutenant Whitaker, a nephew of his. We were eating watermelons, when I said something that he so flatly contradieted, that I supposed he intended to say I lied; on which I broke a half of a melon on his head, to which he said, "Brooke, you did not think I meant to tell you, you lied." I said, "If you did not, I am sorry I broke the melon on your head"; and there it ended. But his uncle, I presume, did not think it ought to have ended there. Whitaker had fought a duel going out with a Capt. Blair, of the Pennsylvania line, and wounded him, which made him, at least in appearance, a little arrogant, and our difference was the talk of the camp.

Now, what shall I say of myself? The war was over, and it was time that I should look to some other profession than that of arms. I was not quite twenty years of age, and like other young men of the times, having an indulgent father, who permitted me to keep horses, I wasted two or three years fox hunting, and sometimes in racing; was sometimes at home for three or four weeks at a time. My father had an excellent family library. I was fond of reading history; read Hume's History of England, Robertson's History of Charles the Fifth, some of the British Poets, Shakespeare, Dryden, Pope, etc., and most of the literature of Queen Anne's reign, and even Blackstone's Commentaries, before I had determined to study law. Having resolved at last to pursue some profession, my brother, Dr. Brooke, prevailed upon me to study medicine. I read his books with him for about twelve months, when my brother Robert would say to me, "Frank, you have missed your path, and had better study law." I soon after took his advice, and commenced the study of the law with him, and in 1788, I applied for a license to practice law. There were at that time, in Virginia, only three persons authorized to grant licenses: they were the Attorney General, Mr. Innis, Mr. German Baker, and Col. John Taylor, of Caroline, all distinguished lawyers. I was examined by Mr. Baker, at Richmond, and obtained his signature to my license. I then applied to the Attorney General, Mr. Innis, to examine me, but he was always too much engaged, and I returned home. In a few days after, I received a letter from my old army friend, Capt. Wm. Barret, of Washington's regiment, informing me that he had seen the Attorney General, who expressed great regret that he had not had it in his power to examine his friend, Mr. Brooke; but that he had talked with Mr. Baker, and was fully satisfied of his competency, and if he would send his license down to Richmond, he would sign it. I accordingly sent the license to him, and he signed it, by which I became a lawyer. I afterwards returned to my brother's office, and applied myself more than I had done to the doctrine of pleading, etc.

(V) John Taliaferro Brooke, son of Richard Brooke, was born August 27,
1763, at Smithfield, an old family estate on the Rappahannock river four
miles below Fredericksburg, and died on his estate, Millvale, in Stafford
county, West Virginia, in 1822, aged fifty-nine years. He studied for the
legal profession and practiced it for a time in Fredericksburg, but later
retired to his plantation, where he spent the remainder of his days. For
many years he sat on the bench of the county court of Stafford county,
serving also for many years as justice of the peace. He served as first
lieutenant of artillery in the revolutionary war, at the age of eighteen,
and in recognition of his gallant conduct at the battle of Eutaw was
promoted to brigade major of the park of artillery by Charles Harrison,
who commanded it, and was invited by him to live with him "in the same
marquee to the end of the war." He married Anne Mercer, daughter of
Samuel and Mary (Cary) Selden, of Salvington, Stafford county, Virginia.
They were the parents of five children, three of whom attained adult age,
namely: Samuel Selden, married Angelina Edrington; Francis John, killed
on Christmas Day, 1837, at the battle of Okeechobee, Florida, in the
Seminole Indian war; Henry Laurens, of whom further. The family were
members of the Episcopal church, Mr. Brooke being a vestryman of the
parish.

My twin brother, John, endeared to me by the hardships and dangers of three campaigns, like myself, had no profession, though some time after, he began to study law, got a license and began the practice of the law; he was successful, and became a member of the House of Delegates from his county of Stafford several times. He married a most amiable and excellent lady, and died about the year 1822, leaving a distinguished family,-one of whom, his son Frank, was killed in the Florida War, under Colonel Taylor, now President of the United States. His son Henry is now a distinguished lawyer, at the bar of the Court of Appeals; married Virginia, the daughter of the late Judge Henry St. George Tucker, sometime president of the Court of Appeals.

This Robert Price IS NOT the Robert Price, father of Elizabeth Povall Price, Nancy Ann Price, Elvira Price, Daniel Lewis Price and Mary Price. Per extensive research done by Marilyn Mills, these are the children of Robert Price and wife Mary of Bedford Co, VA. His will is dated 8 June 1816 and was proven 24 June 1816. [Will Book 4:251-253, Bedford county, Va.] In his will, he names all his children who reached maturity, both living and deceased.

Of these children, the daughter Nancy Ann had married Waite Satterwaite and was deceased at the time the will was written. Her children were bequeathed slaves.

The daughter Elizabeth Povall Price was named as the wife of the deceased Samuel Holt and Robert left slaves to her children by Holt, with the provision that her second husband, Thomas B. Edgar could use the profits of their labor to support her children by Holt.

The daughter Elvira Price had married William Thorpe and he bequeathed slaves to her children.

The only son, Daniel Lewis Price was bequeathed the largest number of slaves, plus the remains of the estate.

The daughter Mary Price had married William Holmes and also appears to have be deceased by 1816 in that he left slaves to her children directly.

There is no wife named in the will, which indicates she was also deceased as of 1816.

Catherine married Richard TUNSTALL Jr. in 1781. Richard was born about 1753 and died about 1791, about age 38.

"LOUDOUN COUNTY A HUNDRED YEARS AGO.

Major B. P. NOLAN, grandson of Burr POWELL, has just put us in possession of a
verified copy of the proceedings of a public meeting held in Leesburg, Loudoun
county, on the 14th of June, 1774-nearly one hundred and five years ago. It is
interesting not merely for its antiquity, but as showing the spirit of independence
that animated the breasts of our liberty-loving countrymen two years before the
Declaration of American Independance [sic] in 1776. The original document was
found among the papers of Col. Leven POWELL, at one time member of Congress
from this district, who died in 1810. His son, Burr POWELL, forwarded a copy to R.
H. LEE, Esq., who in 1826 was about to publish a second edition of his Memoirs of
the Life of R. H. LEE, of Revolutionary fame. The second edition of that work,
however, never appeared, and the proceedings of the Loudoun Meeting are now, for
the first time, given to the public in printed form.

We publish the accompanying memoranda of Burr POWELL, as showing the
authenticity of the Paper in question.

PUBLIC MEETING IN LOUDOUN IN 1774.

At a Meeting of the Freeholders and other inhabitants of the County of Loudoun, in
the Colony of Virginia, held at the Court-house in Leesburg, the 14th June, 1774-F.
PEYTON, Esq., in the Chair-to consider the most effectual method to preserve the
rights and liberties of N. America, and relieve our brethren of Boston, suffering
under the most oppressive and tyrannical Act of the British Parliament, made in the
14th year of his present Majesty's reign, whereby their Harber is blocked up, their
Commerce totally obstructed, their property rendered useless-

Resolved, That we will always cheerfully submit to such prerogatives as his Majesty
has a right, by law, to exercise, as Sovereign of the British Dominions, and to no
others.

Resolved, That it is beneath the dignity of freemen to submit to any tax not imposed
on them in the usual manner, by representatives of their own choosing.

Resolved, That the Act of the British Parliament, above mentioned, is utterly
repugnant to the fundamental laws of justice, in punishing persons without even the
form of a trial; but a despotic exertion of unconstitutional power designedly
calculated to enslave a free and loyal people.

Resolved, That the enforcing the execution of the said Act of Parliament by a military
power must have a necessary tendency to raise a civil war, and with our lives and
fortunes, assist and support our suffering brethren(*), of Boston, and every part of
North America that may fall under the immediate hand of oppression, until a redress
of all our grievances shall be procured, and our common liberties established on a
permanent foundation.

Resolved, That the East India Company, by exporting their tea from England to
America, whilst subject to a tax imposed thereon by the British Parliament, have
evidently designed to fix on the Americans those chains forged for them by a venal
ministry, and have thereby rendered themselves odious and detestable throughout
all America. It is, therefore, the unanimous opinion of this meeting not to purchase
any tea- or other East India commodity whatever, imported after the first of this
Month.

Resolved, That we will have no commercial intercourse with Great Britain until the
above mentioned Act of Parliament shall be totally repealed, and the right of
regulating the internal policy of N. America by a British Parliament shall be
absolutely and positively given up.

ResoIved, That Thompson MASON and Francis PEYTON, Esqs., be appointed to
represent the County at & general meeting to be held at Williamsburg on the 1st day
of August next, to take the sense of this Colony at large on the subject of the
preceding resolves, and that they, together with Leven POWELL, William ELLZEY,
John THORNTON, George JOHNSTON and Samuel LEVI, or any three of them, be a
committee to correspond with the several committees appointed for this purpose.

Matthew married Cecilia Gustave BROWN , daughter of Alexander BROWN and Unknown . Cecilia was born on 25 Oct 1794.

Matthew next married Elizabeth LEWIS , daughter of Warner LEWIS and Courtney UNKNOWN . Elizabeth was born on 24 Nov 1795 in Virginia, died on 29 May 1843 in Fauquier Co., VA., at age 47 ⁶, and was buried in May 1843 in Leeds Episcopal Church Cemetery, Hume, VA.

62. Humphey BROOKE was born on 18 Sep 1760 in Virginia and died after 1848 in "Oaklands, " Near Winchester, Frederick Co, VA.

General Notes: Humphrey Brooke was a midshipman in the British Navy in 1775; he resigned and came home to Virginia. Later captured he was treated harshly perhaps because of his earlier service. After the war, he married Sallie Page; lived at "Oaklands," near Winchester, Frederick Co, VA, and d. abt 1840 at near 92. Issue: Robert, Matthew Walker, Mary, and Anne
(Genealogies of Virginia Families I, Brooke, p. 441).

Humphrey Brooke received a pension, while residing in Frederick Co,
VA, for service in the VA Continental Line while living in King William Co, VA, S6763. In it, he stated that he was born 18 Sep 1760.

Humphey married Sarah "Sally" Walker PAGE , daughter of Robert PAGE and Mary BRAXTON , on 7 Feb 1799 in King William Co. VA. Sarah was born in 1772 and died in 1833, at age 61.

158 F i. Elizabeth White BROOKE was born about 1802 in Virginia and died about 1889, about age 87.

Elizabeth married Thomas Mauzie BLAKEMORE about 1825 in Virginia. Thomas was born about 1794 and died about 1838, about age 44.

+ 160 M iii. Walker BROOKE was born on 25 Dec 1813 in Winchester, Clarke County, VA, died on 18 Feb 1869 in Vicksburg, , Warren, Mississippi, at age 55, and was buried in 1869 in Vicksburg Cemetery.

63. Martha BROOKE was born about 1765 in Virginia and died in 1822 in Bedford, VA, about age 57.

General Notes: 1817 COURT: Bedford Co, VA, Sep Term, p. 143. Martha Mennis, relict of Callohill, now Martha Logwood, given 1/3 of his estate.

Frances Callohill Miller was a witness to her mother's will on 1 Jul 1818. Another witness and not her proved the will in 1822 (Bedford Co, VA,
WB 5-344, proved May 1822). Her mother, Martha Brooke Minnis, had
married secondly Thomas Logwood (Bedford Marriage Bonds, 1815).
Her children were listed as Ann B. Robertson, Andrew D. Mennis, Robert B. Mennis, Martha Mennis, Frances C. Miller, and Calohill Mennis. The latter was given most of her estate and in turn he was given the task of providing for sister Martha. In case the mother died before daughter Martha, Callohill was to confine the latter in the Lunatic Hospital of Virginia. Sons Calohill and Robert B. Mennis to be the executors.

Martha married Callohill MINNIS about 1790 in Virginia. Callohill was born on 15 May 1751 in St. Paul's Parish, King George, VA and died on 2 Sep 1812 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky, at age 61.

164 F i. Frances Callohill MINNIS was born about 1792 in Bedford, VA and died after 1818.

General Notes: Frances C. Miller was also named in a deed dated 11 Ap 1815, with her siblings in which they purchase land in Breckinridge Co, KY.

Frances married James MILLER on 24 Nov 1813 in Bedford, VA. James MILLER died on 23 Nov 1829 in Virginia.

General Notes: James Miller died 23 Nov 1829, intestate (Lynchburg Virginian, 26 Nov 1829, p. 3-4); there are two court accounts related to his estate in 1832 which reveal little of his estate and nothing of his family (Bedford Co, VA, WB 8-98, 120). His wife was not the administrator.

165 F ii. Ann Brooke MINNIS was born about 1794 in Bedford, VA and died on 15 Aug 1823 in Charleston, Kanawha Co, VA, about age 29.

General Notes: Ann Brooke Mennis Robertson died at age 29 on 15 Aug 1823, in Charleston,
Kanawha Co, VA; her obituary mentions : "a painful illness of six weeks" and four young children (Richmond Enqiurer, 21 Apr 1822).

Ann married Edwin ROBERTSON on 7 Apr 1812 in Virginia. Edwin was born of Amelia County, VA and died in Jan 1845 in Logan, VA.

General Notes: Moved to what is now West Virginia and may have lived in Monroe Co before settling in Kanawha Co. There were five children born to this marriage:
Callohill Mennis Robertson, b. abt 1813; Edwin James, b. abt 1817, died by drowning in the Kanawha River on 20 Jun 1822 (Charleston [VA] Western Courier, 2 Jul 1822); Henry Robertson, b. abt 1818, d. 1863, Alexandria, LA; Mary Frances Robertson, b. abt 1820, d, Buckingham Co, VA, m. Judge David James Woodfin in 1833; and Ann Brooke Robertson, b. 29 Apr 1823, d. 14 Jan 1903, Wytheville, VA, m. Anthony Lawson IV, 1839.

166 M iii. Callohill MINNIS was born in 1796 in Bedford, VA, died on 19 Dec 1829 in Bedford, VA, at age 33, and was buried in 1829 in Steptoe-Callaway Cemetery, Bedford, VA.

Martha next married Thomas LOGWOOD on 1 Jan 1816 in Bedford, VA. Thomas was born about 1740 in Chesterfield, VA.

Mary married John "Jack" TALIAFERRO in King William Co., Virginia. John was born on 23 Mar 1764 in King William Co., Virginia. and died after 12 Jan 1836 in King & Queen Co., VA.
