Report taken from Welshpool Rugby Club's website.
Another defeat, this time to unbeaten league leaders Pwllheli, but some encouraging signs as Pool enjoyed the majority of possession and territory but lacked the cutting edge to put points on the board which their pressure deserved.
As early as the second minute Pool had the chance to take the lead with a penalty attempt by captain Big Al, which went wide in the strong wind. With the elements in their favour, Pool's outside half Chris Morris (pictured left) put in some great touch finders to keep Pwllheli pinned back in their own half. The visitors had shown what speed they possessed on a number of occasions as they ran the ball out of defence and after half an hour one such break led to the game's first points, an unconverted try to give the league leaders a 0-5 lead against the run of play.
Two minutes later Pwllheli stretched their lead to 0-10 with their second unconverted try as their backs cut loose again. Whilst Pool were giving as good as they got in the forward exchanges there was always danger whenever the visiting backs had the ball and in perfect playing conditions they ran the ball at every opportunity. With the half time whistle just seconds away Pool suffered a cruel blow as the visitors third try was scored to give an interval scoreline
of 0-15.
Despite facing a strong wind Pool started the second half as
they had the first, enjoying most of the possession but being
held out by a very competent Pwllheli defence. The visitors
soaked up the Pool attacks and after 27 minutes of the half a
breakaway from close to their own line allowed the visitors to
extend their lead to 0-22 with a converted try. Three minutes
later Pool finally got their first points with a penalty from
Big Al. Any thoughts of a comeback were quickly dispelled two
minutes later when Pwllheli scored their final try, converted to
give a final score of 3-29.
