PUBLICANS LICENCES FOR THE EAST COAST AREA extracted from the Auckland Provincial Government Gazettes, 1868 – 1876

Return to home page

The Auckland Provincial Government Gazettes are a rich source of history when used alongside contemporary newspaper reports and travelers accounts of the East Coast. As effective government (provincial or central) was not established in the Poverty Bay – East Coast area until after the military engagements of the mid to late 1860s, there is little official record of hostelry before that time.

And licences may not have always been applied for in some of the more isolated settlements. For instance, it is recorded that Capt. Henry Glover established the first hotel at Uawa or Tolaga Bay on land gifted to Glover by Karauria Pahura in 1866 (and the application for a licence exists in Archives NZ, Wellington) But the first licence gazetted in Glover’s name was in 1871, the year prior to his sale of the Pahura Hotel to Capt. John Trimmer.

As European settlement proceeded in Poverty Bay from 1866, the number of hotels increased, especially with the establishment of the town of Gisborne (formerly Turanga or Turanganui) in 1870. When a six-foot bridle track was pushed north towards Tolaga Bay and later on to Awanui, near the mouth of the Waiapu river near present-day Ruatoria, the licenced trade burgeoned on the East Coast as well.

The Annual Licencing Meeting, held on 22 April 1873 at Gisborne, was reported in the Poverty Bay Standard of Wednesday 23 April, will shortly be added below the table of  licences extracted from the gazettes. Full references to the gazette material, with year and page, are available by email from Stephen Donald

Notes:

  1. this table is arranged by surname of licencee, as the names of hotels in the gazettes vary from year to year, and the definitions of district and location is also variable. Inconsistencies of spelling etc are noted where appropriate.
  2. hyperlinked hotel names link to copies of newspaper advertisements – more will be added as they become available
  3. Use your browser’s FIND facility to search this page
  4. KEY TO TABLE: BL – publicans bush licence; 10PM – hotel open till 10pm;  12AM – hotel open till midnight; WS – wholesale licence
