Welcome
to my homepage which features some of the fascinating history of Tolaga Bay on
the East Coast of New Zealand's North Island
Known
as Uawa to the local iwi, Te Aitanga a Hauiti, the district is one of long
human occupation. Te Aitanga a Hauiti maintain strong oral history and vibrant
local culture, building on the traditions of the 16th century whare
wananga, Te Rawheoro, established the great tohunga Hingangaroa.
At
Opoutama (now known as Cook's Cove) Capt James Cook made his first positives
contacts with East Coast Maori in October 1769, assisted greatly by the
Tahitian tohunga,artist and interpreter, Tupaia.
This
website presents some of the historical research I am undertaking at present,
and contains links to a range of other websites of interest to those who are
passionate about the history and culture of the Tolaga Bay district. There are
also databases that I have collated from a range of sources that I offer to
help other people with their historical research.

The Uawanui
Festival - an expo that promotes and celebrates the
cultural, social and economic achievements and potential of Uawa and Te Aitanga
a Hauiti. Associated with the Uawanui Festival is Ru Uawa, an R18 New Years Eve
Concert promoting Kaupapa and Te Reo Maori through music at Tolaga Bay.

Te Ao Hou - search and browse
all 76 issues of the magazine Te Ao Hou The New World, which was
published from 1952 to 1976 by the Maori Affairs Department.
Transactions and
Proceedings of the Royal Society of New Zealand 1868-1961 is one of New
Zealand's most important research publications, particularly for science and
ethnology. The first 60 volumes representing the years
1868-1930 are currently available online through the National Library.

user-friendly.
