 NEWTON VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPT., INC.

*** CURRENT FIRE TRUCKS :-)

Around the same time that the Mack truck was paid off the Waukesha apparatus was beginning to have engine trouble. In order to retain our ISO rating it was necessary to have two fire engines in usuable condition. We petitioned the city for help in obtaining a replacement engine. With some negotiating and legwork it was finally decided to contract with E-One of Ocala, Florida to build us a brand new engine. We took delivery of the new truck in 1992. This new truck added to the capability of our department immensely.

The 1991 GMC Topkick sports a diesel engine with a powerful transmission. We can put out 100 psi at the nozzle with hardly any rpm advance. The pump is rated at 1250 gpm and carries 1000 gallons of water. Once attached to a hydrant she can produce 3 hand lines as if it were nothing. Only a few times have we ever tested her strength and that was during pump testing. It was observed that she could produce over 1600 gpm for a short period of time with all systems working properly.

We have a strict preventative maintenance policy. By using this method it is hoped that we see many years of service from this vehicle.

In the summer of 2001 we had a brush fire which was endangering some houses. Enroute to this fire our Dodge brush truck lost transmission power. Although it would run a little it was not capable of being a fire fighting apparatus. So our search began for a new brush truck to replace this unit.

Again we called a meeting to discuss specifications. This time we announced the bid process and sent forms to 5 manufacturers. Of those 5 we only received 2 acknowledgements. One of those did not bid which in effect left only one company bidding on the truck. In May of 2002 we took delivery of our new Ford truck built by Fouts Bros., Inc. of Smyrna, GA.

This truck has proven to be a great investment for our department. We are looking forward to many years of service from it. It is one of the best looking brush trucks in the county.

We have the capability of hooking to a hydrant or drafting from a creek or stream. We carry back packs for brush fire fighting along with rakes and shovels. We also have a chain saw on each of our trucks. Recently we purchased a hoist to attach to the front of this truck so we could further our capability.

The brush truck is a 2002 Ford F350 with dual wheels on the rear. It carries 300 gallons of water and the pump is rated at 300 gpm discharge. It also has foam capabilities, plenty of storage and plenty of hose on the reel. We can even attach a 1 1/2" handline if we are connected to a water source.

UPDATE: IN MAY OF 2008 WE TOOK OWNERSHIP OF A NEW AMERICAN LAFRANCE PUMPER WITH THE HELP OF A GRANT FROM FEMA/HOMELAND SECURITY. A WRITEUP WILL BE FORTHCOMING.
