Jesse Bogart was born 12/4/1827 in Pennsylvania and died in 1914 in Mercer County, Illinois. He married (1) Effie Ann Unknown, (2) Mary M. Riggs, and (3) Cornelia F. Hawks. His father and other relatives are given on the Pennsylvania Families page (link above). He was son of John and Maria Gaumer Bogart.

Jesse Bogart purchased the SWSE of Section 8, Township 15N5W [Eliza] on 11/14/1854 for $1.25 per acre. See his land in 1875 on the Eliza Township plat map in Section 8 (a small parcel in the NESW quarter.) According to the History of Mercer County 1882 Jesse Bogart built a steam saw mill about 1864 but it did not do much business for want of patronage. The 1875 plat shows a "meander" along one side of Jesse's property and there might have been a stream there at one time.

Jesse Bogart was listed as a farmer in the 1860 census. In October 1859 he supplied a basket of refreshments to the Eliza Teachers' Institute meeting at the Boruff schoolhouse in Eliza Township (see Schools). Jesse is listed as a bee raiser in the 1880 census.

Effie Ann was probably a Randolph as there were several Randolphs living in the Bogart household in 1860 when the census was taken. Jesse is listed as head of household and as a farmer. With them are John Randolph, 36, laborer, born Pennsylvania; Henry, age 5, born Illinois; Ella, age 8, born Pennsylvania; Charlotte, age 23, born Pennsylvania; Douglas 7/12, born Illinois. John Randolph may have been a brother of Effie. Effie Ann was born 3/10/1833 in Pennsylvania and died 2/26/1866 in Mercer County. Effie Ann and Jesse were probably married in Pennsylvania. There were no children from this marriage.

Jesse married Mary M. Riggs 2/21/1867 in Mercer County. She was born 12/2/1844 in Ohio and died 3/22/1887 in Mercer County, Illinois. There were several Riggs families in Mercer County in 1860 but they are from Kentucky. In the 1880 census Mary lists her father born New York and her mother born Ohio, so there is apparently no connection to the other Riggs families in Mercer County. Her mother was Hannah Riggs who was living with Jesse & Mary in the 1880 census. A Riggs brother Milan was also living with them. Jesse apparently had a good heart as he had relatives of his wives living with him in the 1860 census and in the 1880 census.

In 1870 Jesse and Mary Bogart were living in Eliza Township: #86 Jesse, age 41, farmer, born Pennsylvania; Mary, age 25, born Ohio; Oscar, age 2, born Illinois. Next door to them are Mary Riggs Bogart's parents: #87 Philip Riggs, 71, at home, born New York; Hannah, age 70, born Ohio. They have two Bogart children with them, Emma, age 1, daughter of Jesse & Mary, and Millard Bogart, age 14, born Pennsylvania. It is unclear who Millard Bogart is. Jesse's brother Henry came to Mercer County as well and is found in Eliza Township in 1870: #110 Henry Bogart, farmer, age 30, born Pa; Agnes, 28, born Pa; J. A. Faux, 22, farm laborer, born Pa.

In 1880 in Eliza Township: Jesse Bogart, bee-raising, age 52, born Pa, parents born Pa; Mary M., wife, 34, Ohio, father born NY and mother born Ohio; Oscar, 12, Il; Henry, 8, Il; Emma, 10, Il; Freddie, 6, Il William, 4, Il; Daniel, 2, Il; Hannah Riggs, mother-in-law, 79, born Ohio, father born Delaware, mother born Pa; Milan Riggs, laborer, brother-in-law, 52, born Ohio, father born NY, mother born Ohio. We will be putting up a Riggs page.

Children of Jesse Bogart and Mary Riggs were: Oscar, born about 1868; Emma, born about 1870; Henry, born Feb 20, 1871 (married Hannah Williams 9/21/1898); Freddie, born about 1874; William, born about 1876 (married Lydia Williams 9/20/1899); Daniel, born about 1878, and Augustus, born about 1882.

Jesse married Cornelia F. Hawks 9/29/1888 in Mercer County. She was born 2/20/1844 and died 2/13/1913 in Mercer County. Jesse and all three of his wives are buried together in Eliza Creek Cemetery: Effie Ann Bogart (March 20, 1833-Feb 26, 1866) (Cornelia F. Bogart (Feb 20, 1844-Feb 13, 1913; Mary M. Bogart Dec 2 1844 - March 22, 1887.) Son Henry E. Bogart, died Feb 22, 1938 is also buried there. Son Augustus (1882-1950) is also buried there.
