Obituary - Henry G. Osterloh
The Hooper Sentinel
April 29, 1943
Sudden Death of Henry Osterloh
Word of the sudden death at around 8 o'clock yesterday morning of
Henry Osterloh, well known retired farmer, cast a pall of gloom and
sorrow over this community of which he had been a life long
resident. Death came before he arose to begin the day's activities,
although he had made no complaint of feeling ill when his wife left
their room a short time before and had been following his customary
daily routine all of the previous day.
Death resulted from a heart attack, an ailment with which he was
stricken in March of 1942, at which time he was very ill and from
which he made a very slow and gradual recovery. He and his family
moved into town from their farm north of the city in the fall of
1940 after spending all of his previous years on the same farm on
which he was born.
The son of John G. and Meta Behrens Osterloh, early pioneer
settlers of Logan township, Henry G. Osterloh was born October 28,
1895, on the home place which after the retirement of his father
from active farming he successfully operated. He was united in
marriage on January 23, 1918, to Alma Uehling, the couple observing
their silver anniversary this year. His death came on April 28,
1943, while he was still in the prime of his manhood, aged 47 years
and 6 months.
A director of the First National Bank of Hooper and of the Hooper
Telephone company, he was active in the interests of both concerns.
For many years he served on the board of education of his home
school, district 18, and also as president of the rural school
board association of Dodge county.
He was member of the Grace Lutheran church of Hooper and had served
terms on the church council. He was also affiliated with the
Knights of Pythias and A. F. & A. M. fraternal orders.
Mr. and Mrs. Osterloh were the parents of two daughters, Kathryn,
in civil service at Washington, D. C., since late last year, and
Vernel a high school senior. Surviving also are one brother, Emil,
of Hooper, and two sisters, Mrs. John A. Schroeder of Hooper and
Mrs. Adolph Moeller of Scribner. By the members of this close
family circle and by a host of both old and new neighbors and
friends, cheery, genial Henry Osterloh, who loved his family and
keenly appreciated friendly intercourse with his fellow man, will
be greatly missed.
Funeral arrangements were awaiting word of the time of arrival of
the elder daughter from Washington, and had not been announced at
the time of the paper going to press. Arrangements are in charge of
Wollmer and Warne.
OSTERLOH, HENRY GEORGE

Ludwig Uehling. A member of that old and substantial family of
Uehlings, who from pioneer days to the present have been decided
factors in the agriculture, business and civic affairs of Dodge and
Washington counties, Ludwig Uehling has applied his efforts almost
entirely to farming, and in that vocation has achieved most
substantial success, at the same time winning the confidence and
trust of his home community. His farm and home are in section 10 of
Logan Township.
Mr. Uehling was born near Hooper in Washington County November 8,
1865, a son of Theodore Uehling, a prominent pioneer for whom the
town of Uehling was named. A sketch of Theodore Uehling and family
is found on other pages. Ludwig Uehling attended some of the
pioneer schools of eastern Nebraska, but the best lessons were
those he learned by practical contact with the land and with men.
He was strong, self-reliant and ambitious and soon after reaching
manhood had acquired some lands for himself. He married at the age
of thirty, and since then has given a quarter of a century to the
general farming and stockraising. He has always favored good stock,
and his efforts have served to advance the standards of livestock
in his section. His farm contains a herd of ten registered
Holstein cattle. He also keeps a good grade of horses. His farm
represents a growing business and a substantial degree of
prosperity, all of which has been won from a very modest start.
In a public way he has served his township as treasurer two years
and for many years as treasurer of the school board. In politics he
is a republican.
In 1895 Mr. Uehling married a daughter of Henry Von Seggern. To
their marriage have been born five children: Mrs. Alma Osterloh,
Edna, Orville, Windsor and Kenneth.
