Obituary - Clarence D. Clouse

Dec. 15, 1982
Clarence "Buck" D. Clouse, 76, of 2068 E. Second St. died Tuesday in
Memorial Hospital of Dodge County after a lengthy illness.
He was born May 25, 1906, in Colon and farmed in the Hooper, Ames
and Colon areas before retiring in Fremont in 1971.
He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Fremont and a
former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 200 in Fremont.
Mr. Clouse married Nellie Suhr Jan. 19, 1984, in Omaha. She
survives.
Other survivors include three daughters, DeLoros Clouse of Lincoln
and Mrs. Russel (Nadine) Johnson and Mrs. Delwyn (Norma Lee)
Helgenberger, both of Scrobner; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Steinbach
of Fremont and Mrs. Reuben (Ada) Gustafson of Mead; six
grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday in the United Presbyterian
Church in Fremont, the Rev. John Swearingin officiating. Burial wil
be in St. Paul's Cemetery north of Hooper.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday in Moser Memorial
Chapel in Fremont and at the church from 11:30 a.m. until time of
services Friday.
Memorials may be made to the church.

Pernella Minnie "Nellie" Clouse, 95, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at
Fremont Area Medical Center.
Pernella Nelson was born Dec. 19, 1905 at Wausa. She grew up on a
farm near Wayne. After attending Wayne State College, she taught
school for three years in Wayne County. She married Oswald Suhr
Feb. 10, 1926 at Wayne. After her marriage, the couple lived on a
farm near Uehling for 31 years. He died Sept. 17, 1959. After her
husband Oswald's death, she moved to Fremont in 1960. She was
employed at the former Safeway Grocery Store and at the Fremont
Area Medical Center. She then married Clarence D. "Buck" Clouse
Jan. 19, 1964 at Omaha. The couple lived on a farm near Colon until
moving back to Fremont in 1971. She had been residing at the Good
Samaritan Center in Scribner since August 2000.
She was a member of Presbyterian Church at Fremont and United
Presbyterian Women; Mariner's Club; Fraternal Order of Eagles 200
Auxiliary; A.A.R.P. and R.E.A.C.T.
Survivors include: two daughters, Nadine (Mrs. Russel) Johnson of
Scribner and Norma Lee Helgenberger of Fremont; six grandchildren
and 17 great-grandchildren; one stepdaughter, DeLoris Clouse of
Lincoln. She was also preceded in death by an infant son, five
infant brothers and sisters, three sisters and a great-grandson.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Presbyterian Church
in Fremont. The Rev. Stephen J. Brownlee will officiate. Visitation
will be 1 p.m. to 9 tonight at Moser Memorial Chapel and one hour
prior to service at the church. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday
at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, north of Hooper.
A memorial has been established to the church.

Obituary - Bonnie Evans
Bonnie Farner Evans, 87, died Tuesday evening, July 23, 2008, at The
Greenbriar, in Joplin, MO.
Born on November 22, 1920, in Atkinson, NE, she was the eldest of
three children born to Floyd Durling Farner and Ethel Leona Lund
Farner, late residents of Norfolk and Omaha. She was a 1938 graduate
of Norfolk High School and attended Wayne State Normal College,
Wayne, NE.
On October 14, 1944, Miss Bonita Phyllis Farner, of Norfolk, and
residing in Carroll, IA, and Lt. Edwin Denio Evans, of Norfolk, and
stationed in Puerto Rico, son of John L. and Katherine McCarroll
Evans, Storm Lake, IA, formerly of Norfolk, were married by Dr.
Harry E. Hess at the Norfolk First Methodist Church. During their 56
years together they resided in Joplin, Norfolk, Ponce, Puerto Rico,
Monett, MO, and Dallas, TX.
She was predeceased her parents; her husband, Ed, on November 14,
2000, an infant grandson, and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Joe (Sandy)
Farner.
Survivors include her sons, Doug Evans, and his wife, Jane, of Dade
City, FL; and Bill, and his wife, Kathy, of Joplin; 6 grandchildren:
Eden Moore, of Tulsa, OK; Cameron Menghini, of Wesley Chapel, FL;
Lani Evans, B.J. Evans, and Kalee Spencer, all of Joplin; and Kim
Miller Johnson, of Atlanta, GA; 7 great-grandchildren; her two
brothers: Joe Farner, of Norfolk; and Dr. G.N. "Jack" Farner, and
his wife, Jeanne, of Lyndhurst, OH and Jupiter, FL; nieces, Kathy

Richard Gnuse, 13, Loses Life in Farm Accident
Richard Lee Gnuse, 13 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Gnuse of
Nickerson, was killed in a farm accident shortly after noon on
Saturday, when the tractor he was driving overturned in a creek.
Richard was pinned underneath the tractor.
The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon at the Salem Lutheran
Church, Fontanelle, with Rev. Otto Spehr officiating. Interment was
in the Church Cemetery with Wollmer & Warne in charge. Pallbearers
were Elmer Wesemann of Blair; William Springan of Hooper; Delwyn
Helgengerger and Russell Johnson of Scribner; Vernon Lallman of
Fremont, and Dean Lallman of Arlington. Honorary pallbearers were
Kent Moravec and Tom Monke of Arlington; Donald Wilkins of Fremont;
Darrell Sagehorn, Tom Johnson, and Tim Schafersman. Soloist was J.
F. McCartney, accompanied by Miss Esther Langhorst.
Richard was born at Fremont May 25, 1954. He was in the Eighth
Grade in the Telbasta School. He was baptized and confirmed, and a
member of Salem Lutheran Church, Fontanelle.
Richard was a member of the Hooper Saddle Club. He was a handsome,
well-mannered lad, popular with young and old alike. His death is
mourned by a wide circle of friends and relatives, who sympathize
with the family in their sad loss.
Richard is survived by his parents, two brothers, Rod and Larry;
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence R. Otteman of Hooper, and August
Gnuse of Fremont.
Seated together at the funeral service were members of his
Confirmation Class, Wendy Peterson, Pam Timm, Nancy Doll, Sancha
Cunningham, David Gobar and Leonard Lubker.

Services Held For Delwyn Helgenberger
Delwyn W. "Dutch" Helgenberger died Friday, July 8, at the Clarkson
Hospital in Omaha.
He was born June 21, 1928 at Scribner, Nebr. to Wm. A. C. and
Adelia (Hoge) Helgenberger. He was educated in the Scribner Public
Schools. He farmed in the Scribner area his entire lifetime.
On Dec. 18, 1949 he was married to Norma Lee Suhr at St. Paul's
Lutheran Church, Hooper, Nebr.
He was a member of the United Lutheran Church, Dodge Co. Feeders,
and Scribner Rural Fire Board.
He is survived by his wife; sons, David and Stephen, and five
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sons,
Mark and Gary; and one brother, Arlan.
Funeral services were held Monday July 11, at the United Lutheran
Church in Scribner with Pastor Donald Nelson officiating.
Pallbearers were Ken Salmon, Lanny Hoogner, Glenn Otteman, Roy
Ahrndt, Dean Hoge, Don Happel, Wayne Hansen, and Kenneth Schafer.
Burial was in the Scribner Cemetery.

Norma L. Helgenberger, 70, of Fremont, formerly of the Scribner
area, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at A.J. Merrick Manor in
Fremont.
She was born Sept. 27, 1931, in rural Scribner. She lived most of
her life around the Scribner area. She graduated from Scribner High
School in 1948 and was class valedictorian. She was a homemaker.
She married Delwyn Helgenberger Dec. 18, 1949, north of Hooper. Her
spouse preceded her in death July 8, 1983. She moved to Fremont in
1988.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Fremont. She was also
a member of Hope Circle at First Lutheran Church. She was a former
member and church organist at St. John's Ridgeley Lutheran Church
southwest of Scribner for many years.
Survivors include: two sons, David Helgenberger of Omaha and Stephen
Helgenberger of Scribner; a sister, Nadine (Mrs. Russell) Johnson
of Scribner; and six grandchildren. She also was preceded in death
by two sons, a grandson and her stepfather.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in
Fremont. The Revs. Anjanette Rist and Norman L. Freund will
officiate. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Friday at Moser Memorial
Chapel in Fremont with family receiving friends from 6:30-8 p.m.
Visitation continues one hour prior to service time Saturday at the
church. Burial will be in Scribner Cemetery.

Hattie L. Johnson Of Fremont Dies
Services for Mrs. Hattie L. Johnson, 76 of 418 E. Sixth Street, are
pending at the Lawson Funeral Chapel. Mrs. Johnson died Thursday
morning at a Fremont rest home after having been ill since January.
She was born January 22, 1886 at Swaburg. She had been a resident
of Fremont for 12 years and previously had lived on a farm near
Newman Grove. She was a member of First Methodist Church. She
was married March 17, 1909 at Uehling to John E. Johnson, former
Dodge County assessor, who died March 29, 1957.
Survivors include two sons, Edwin L. Johnson, Lincoln and Norman D.
of Long Pine, eight grandchildren, a brother, Andrew Lund of
Uehling and several nieces and nephews.

Services for Mrs. Hattie L. Johnson, 76, 418 East Sixth Street,

Music was by Mrs. John Katz, soloist and Miss Janice Nelson
organist. Pallbearers were Walter, Irving and Roy
Larson, Alfred Brandt, William Wolfe, Edward Realph, Howard Weigle
and Lloyd Thompson.
Burial was in Baptist Cemetery near Uehling with Lawson's Funeral
Home in charge.

Services for John E. Johnson, 74, of 1150 N. Broad St. who died
Friday, will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Methodist Church. The
Rev. Max McCamley will officiate.
Mr. Johnson, a retired farmer and assessor at the Court House for
many years, was born Dec. 5, 1882 at Lindsey. He had lived ten
years in this community.
He was member of the Methodist Church and the Fraternal Order of
Eagles.
He married Hattie Lund March 17, 1908 at Uehling.
Survivors include the widow, Hattie; sons, Edward L. Johnson of
Fremont, Norman V. Johnson of Long Pine; brothers, Henry of Invale,
Oscar of Bakersfield, Calif., William of Omaha; sisters, Miss Helen
Johnson, Mrs. Mabel Swanson, Mrs. William Baker, all of Hastings,

Popular Young Swaburg Lady is Called by Death
The Angel of Death visited the Swaburg community last Tuesday
afternoon, March 9th, when Miss Alice Lund, the 27 year-old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Lund, was summoned Home after a
lingering illness.
Alice Lillian Lund was born in Wausa on January 1st, 1899, was
baptized there on March 19th of the same year, and took her
confirmation vows in the Elim Lutheran church at Swaburg on
September 3rd, 1916. When a small child she came with her parents
to Swaburg where they resided for several years before moving to
their farm near Atkinson. Later they removed to Swaburg which has
been her family home since.
After having completed her education in the rural schools, Alice
attended the Hooper high school and the York Business College. In
1917 she entered the Ford hospital at Omaha to take a nurses'
training course, but after a time she was forced to discontinue the
work on account of her frail health. However, she again resumed her
training at Omaha, having regained her health and strength, and in
February of last year she was graduated from the Paxton Memorial
hospital, formerly the Ford hospital. For several months
following, she did duty as nurse in and around Omaha, and in the
summer went to Colorado where she was employed in the hospital at
Fort Morgan. But the strenuous duties of her chosen profession
proved too great a strain for her, and, in spite of her steadfast
patience and enduring courage, she was compelled to give up the
work returning to her parental home in November. For about three
months she was confined to her bed and the most skilled care was
commanded in her interest, but proved of no avail, and she passed
on to her eternal rest.
Besides the parents there remain to mourn her untimely demise, two
sisters, Mrs. Ethel Farner, of Norfolk, and Ruth, of Swaburg, also
her aged grand-father, Nels Martenson, of - - - - - - - - - - - - -
seas in the World War.
As an individual, Alice was possessed of a happy and optimistic
disposition, and was appreciated and loved by her friends. Hers
was an ideal life, dedicated to the service of mercy and
ministration, and with her passing, the mysteries of life and death
are deepened to us, as she had such bright prospects for a life of
service before her, but, when re-united "beyond the shining gates
of gold", the veil will be lifted and all things made clear, for
"Christ has made of death a star-lit strip between the companion-
ship of yesterday and the re-union of to-morrow".
The funeral was solemnized on Friday afternoon, with a brief prayer
service at the late home, followed by the formal service at the
Elim Lutheran church, of which the deceased was a member, her
pastor, the Rev. J. S. Benson having charge, and preaching the
sermon from the text "So teach us to number our days, that we may
apply our hearts unto wisdom." The church male quartet sang, "Saved
by Grace" and "Nearer to Thee", and Pastor Benson and H. B.
Andersen sang a requested favorite selection "Beyond the Shining
Gates of Gold."
Interment was made in the family lot in the quiet God's Acre
adjacent to the church. The pall-bearers were Miss Julia Heller,
of Hooper, Miss Stanley, of Fremont, and the Misses Jane Hollister,
Vesta Beebe, Margaret Doher an Anna Schmeckle, of Omaha, all
formerly of the Paxton Memorial hospital. It was a sadly beautiful
and deeply impressive ceremony as the six nurses, clad in full
uniform, performed this last service for the departed friend.

Alice, the daughter of Lars & Anna M. MARTINSON Lund, baptized,
Mar.19,1899, & confirmed in the Elim Lutheran Church, Swaburg,
Sept.3,1916. She & her parents lived in Swaburg, a farm near
Atkinson, & then back to Swaburg until her death.
She was educated in the rural schools, Hooper High school, York
Business College of NE,& graduated in 1925, from Paxton Memorial
Hospital,Omaha, becoming a duty nurse in Omaha, & later, at Fort
Morgan Hospital,CO.
Three months after confinement she died of TB, the illness for which
she had treated others at Fort Morgan.
Besides her parents, left to mourn her untimely demise, were two
sisters, Mrs. Ethel Farner, Norfolk, Ruth Nelson, Swaburg, &
grandfather, Nels Martenson, all who had mourned the loss of her
brother, Cpl.Lawrence Noble Lund, Oct 16,1918, in the trenches of
France, WWI,with burial in ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY.
Pall-bearers were six nurses, all formerly of Paxton Memorial
Hospital, clad in full uniform, performing this last service for
their departed friend: Julia Heller,Hooper, Miss Stanley,Fremont,
Jane Hollister,Vesta Beebe, Margaret Doher,& Anna Schmeckle,Omaha.

Rites Are Held Monday For Andrew Lund
Andrew L. Lund, 82, of Uehling, died Dec. 3 at the Oakland Hospital
where he had been a patient for two months. He had been ill for 5
years.
Mr. Lund was born at Uehling on August 11, 1882, the son of Lars
and Carrie Lund. He spent his entire life on the farm homesteaded
by his parents.
On Nov. 3, 1903 he married Anna Herrmann, and she preceded him in
death April 19, 1918. He is survived by a number of nieces and
nephews.
The funeral service was held on Monday at the Congregational Church
in Uehling, with the Rev. Ross Louthan in charge. Interment was in
the Baptist Cemetery south of Uehling with Wollmer & Warne in
charge.

Mrs. Andrew L. Lund
On Friday evening, April 19, 1918, at her home south of Uehling,
occurred the death of Mrs. Andrew L. Lund, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
August Herrmann, of this place. Death was caused by an attack of
grip turning into pneumonia. For a week she struggled bravely and
patiently, waiting for relief, but in vain. The breaking of all
earthly ties came at 6 o'clock on Friday evening, when an all wise
father called her home.
Deceased was born on a farm east of Hooper, September 1, 1887. On
November 4, 1903, she became the wife of Andrew L. Lund, who
together with her parents and four sisters and three brothers
survive to mourn the early death of one greatly loved. Her own
mother passed away when she was 10 years old, her place being
filled a few years later by her step-mother, the present Mrs.
Herrman. Close surviving relatives are, the husband, Andrew A.
Lund; her father and step mother; two brothers, John and Paul: two
sisters, Lizzie and Mrs. Oscar Clark; one half brother, August, and
two little half-sisters, Clair and Laurine.
Mrs. Lund was a baptized and confirmed member of the Lutheran faith
and an ardent worker in the Uehling Ladies' Aid.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Lund home at
one o'clock and at 1:30 from the Congregational church at Uehling.
Reverends Schrader of Hooper and Mettler of Omaha were in charge.
Interment was made in the Swedish Lutheran church cemetery near
Uehling. The pall-bearers were Jacob Larson, Henry Peterson, Arthur
Bowman, Fred Frost, Eric Larson and Lars Larson.
Friends and relatives from a distance present at the funeral were:

Mrs. Anna M. Lund, 89, passed away Sunday in an Omaha hospital.
Funeral services were held here on Tuesday morning at the Wollmer &
Warne Funeral Home, with the Rev. Alva Clarke of St. Paul's
Methodist Church in Omaha officiating. The pallbearers were Richard
Nelson, Clarence Otteman, Martin Olson, Harry Nelson, Earl
Westergren and Carl Olson. Interment was in the Swaburg Cemetery.
Mrs. Lund was born Jan. 7, 1872, near Swaburg, the daughter of Nels
and Elna Martinson. On Sept. 12, 1892 she was married to Lars. L.
Lund in Fremont.
After marriage they farmed near Wausa, later moving to a farm near
Swaburg. Mr. Lund died Jan. 16, 1950 and for a number of years Mrs.
Lund lived with her daughter, Mrs. Floyd Farner in Omaha.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Farner and Mrs. Carl H. Nelson of
Fremont; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Olson of Fremont, and Mrs. Hilda
Kelley of Torrance, Calif.; three grandchildren and nine great
grandchildren.

Carrie Larson Lund was born on August 3, 1847 at Våmhus, Mora,
Dalarna, Sweden. Her parents were Lars Larson and Brita
Andersdotter Larson. She emigrated to the USA about 1863. She
married Lars Larson Lund on April 28, 1866 in Omaha, Nebraska. She
was his second wife. Carrie died on March 2, 1893 near the present
town of Uehling, NE. She was the mother of 13 children: Lars
(1868-1950), Anders (1869-1870), Henry (1870-1871), Mary (1872-
1900), Anna (1874-1875), Anders (1875-1875), Eric (1877-1957),
William (1880-1942), Andrew (1882-1964), Fred (1884-1885), Hattie
(1886-1962), and 2 unknown. Carrie is buried at the Baptist
cemetery, Uehling, NE.

Obituary - Clarence Lund
Clarence Lund was born September 28, 1903, on the same farm his
father was born, near Uehling, Nebraska and died in Burke, South
Dakota at the age of 92 years.
Clarence taught school for seven years, and the remainder of his
adult life was spent farming. He resided with his brothers, George
and Leon, 4« miles northwest of Burke in Rhoades Township.
Clarence enjoyed traveling and sightseeing. He traveled throughout
most of the United States and once to the Worlds Fair in Chicago.
He spent much of his time reading and especially enjoyed reading
about the railroad. Collecting coins was one of his favorite
hobbies.
He spent the last eight years at Park View Manor in Burke. He
really enjoyed the meals at the Burke Nutrition Center.
Clarence is survived by two sisters; Lillian Suiter of Burke, SD;
and Florence Dobesh of Gregory, SD; several nieces and nephews and
several great nieces and nephews.
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, Eric and Sigrid
Lund; four brothers; Paul, George, Leon and Harold; two sisters;
Hannah Ackerman and Ruth Ahlers; and for brothers-in-law; Adolph
Ackerman, Forrest Suiter, Elmer Dobesh and Henry Ahlers.

LUND, ERIC ****************************************************************** Obituary - George Edward Lund Funeral services for George Edward Lund, 84, were held Saturday, February 13, 1993 at 1:00 p.m. at Clausen Chapel in Burke, with Rev. Dan Freed officiating. Interment was in the Graceland Cemetery, Burke with Clausen Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Ronald Dobesh, Bradley Lear, Richard Lund, David Dobesh, Dennis Dobesh, Dean Ahlers, Don Bails and Paul Dobesh. Honorary casket bearers were all his friends and all his students he taught. Ruth and Arlene Dobesh were in charge of registration. Flower attendants were LaVerle Dobesh and Shirley Lear. Music was provided by Larry and Don Roggow, and Twila Ward, accompanist. George Edward Lund was born on a farm near Magnet, Nebraska to Eric and Sigrid (Pearson) Lund. This was about ten miles from where his mother was born. George and his family lived there until the spring of 1912 when they moved to Gregory County. Here they lived in a sod house on a farm for one year. The next year they leased a quarter section of land that had a small frame house on it. George attended rural schools and attended Burke High School and graduated in 1928. He attended Southern State Normal School in Springfield, receiving his First Grade Teacher's Certificate. George taught school for 29 years in the counties of Gregory, Tripp, Todd and Bennett. George and his brother Leon farmed on their farm 4« miles northwest of Burke and also in Todd and Bennett Counties. George passed away February 8, 1993 in McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls at the age of 84 years, 11 months and 17 days. Survivors include one brother Clarence Lund and two sisters Lillian Suiter of Burke and Florence Dobesh of Gregory. One sister-in-law, Vila Lund and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Sigrid and Eric Lund, two sisters Hanna Ackerman and Ruth Ahlers, three brothers Leon, Paul and Harold, four brothers-in-law Adolph Ackerman, Elmer Dobesh, Forrest Suiter and Henry Ahlers, and one great-great nephew Richard Paul Dobesh.LUND, GEORGE EDWARD ****************************************************************** Obituary - Harold E. He moved, with his family, to a farm in the Burke area in 1912. He received his schooling here graduating from Burke High School in 1929. He received his Teachers Certificate from Springfield Teachers College. Harold was united in marriage to Viola Stevicks August 9, 1936 in Burke and to this union 4 children were born. Harold farmed in the Lucas area, taught school for 21 years in Gregory County. He was the Gregory County Assessor for 14 years retiring in 1975 with 5 years post-retirement work for the ASCS Office. Harold was a member of the Lucas Telephone Company, member of the I.O.O.F. and Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sigrid and Eric Lund, two sisters, Hannah Ackerman and Ruth Ahlers, two brothers, Paul and Leon Lund. Lund, lifetime resident of Hooper, passed away Jan. 16, at the Immanuel Lutheran hospital in Omaha, on his 82 nd birthday. The funeral at 2 o'clock at the chapel of the Wolmer and Warne Funeral Home, with Rev. Paul de Freese in Charge. Don Shaffer is soloist, accompanied by Marlene Rodgers. Pallbearers are C. R. Otteman, Oswald Suhr, Bob Farner, Carl Olson, Martin Olson and Edward Realph. Burial will be in the Swaburg cemetery. Mr. Lund was born at Hooper Jan. 16, 1868, and married Anna Marteneson in Fremont on Sept. 12, 1892. The couple lived at Wausa eight yrs. returning then to the Hooper community to engage in farming. In 1937 they retired from farming and moved to Hooper. Mr. Lund has been in failing health the past year, and was taken to the hospital in Omaha for care, when Mrs. Lund fell and suffered a broken hip. Mr. Lund is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Floyd Farner of Benson and Mrs. Carl H. Nelson of Fremont; a son, Carl H. of Fremont; a sister, Mrs. J. E. Johnson of Ames; two brothers, Andrew of Uehling and Eric of Burke, S. D.; three grandchildren and a greatgrandchild. A son and daughter preceded him in death.

He was born in Langlit, Mora, Sweden, and moved to Imus at the age of 4 years. He married Miss Carrie Mattson in Sweden and they emigrated to the USA in 1865. A daughter was born and died on the voyage. She was buried at sea. His wife died 2 days after reaching Omaha and she is buried there. In April, 1866 he married Miss Carrie Larson. They had 13 children but 7 died in infancy. His wife, Carrie, died in 1893. The surviving children are: Lars of Atkinson, Eric L. of Gregory, SD, William of Uehling, Andrew of Uehling, Mrs. Swen Nelson of Wayne, and Mrs. E. J. Johnson of Inavale, NE. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren. He lived 1 mile south of Uehling. When Lars was 4 years old the family moved to Imus. He married Carrie Mattson in Sweden and they emigrated to the USA in 1865. During the voyage a daughter was born to them, but the daughter died and she was buried at sea. Lars and Carrie went west to Omaha, NE, and Carrie died 2 days after their arrival. She is buried at Omaha, NE. Carrie Larson and Lars Lund were married on April 28, 1866 at Omaha, Nebraska, and they farmed in the Uehling neighborhood, owning a farm in section 11. They were the parents of 13 children, 7 died in infancy. The known children were; Lars L. (1868-1950), Anders (1869-1870), Henry (1870-1871), Mary Nelson (1872-1900), Anna (1874-1875), Anders (1875-1875), Eric (1877-1957), William (1880-1942), Andrew (1882-1964), Fred (1884-1885) and Hattie Johnson (1886-1962). Carrie died at home on March 2, 1893 and is buried at the Baptist Cemetery south of Uehling. Lars, 72, died in Fremont on March 28, 1914 and is also buried at the Baptist Cemetery. Lars L. Lund married Anna Martinson in 1892 and they had 4 children; Ethel Farner, Lawrence Noble, Alice L., and Ruth Nelson. They lived at Wausa and Hooper, NE. Their only son, L. Noble Lund, was killed in action in France on October 16, 1918. The Uehling, NE American Legion Post is named in his honor. Mary married Swan Nelson in 1896 and they had 6 children; Esther Knuz, Emily Hoegner, an infant daughter, Aylene Otteman, Pernella Suhr/Clouse, and Henning L. They lived near Wayne, NE. Eric L. Lund married Sigrid Pearson in 1902 and they had 9 children; Clarence, Hanna Ackerman, George E., Harold E., Paul, Lillian Sutter, Florence Dobesh, Leon and Ruth Ahlers. L. Lund of Swaburg. Over one hundred of Hooper community boys are serving with the colors, many of them 'over there'" and while we could expect a "first one" to fall on the field of honor, yet the message of this young man's death came as a thunderbolt out of a clear sky, the great joy which peace brought to the now stricken home, as well as to us all, making the blow doubly hard to bear at this time. Corporal Lawrence Nobel Lund was born at Wausa, Nebr., June 17, 1893, died that Freedom might live, October 16, 1918, aged 25 years, 3 months and 29 days. He received his education in the schools of Wausa, Uehling and Atkinson, being a graduate of the latter school. He chose teaching as his profession, and had spent three most successful years in the work before his enlistment, Sept. 24, 1917. He received his military training at Gettysburg, Pa., and Camp Greene, S. C., sailing for overseas duty from Camp Merritt, N. J., April 30, of this year. He was member of Company H, 61st infantry. That he was made a non-commissioned officer shows that he was following out his life's training in his military career. The loss of this upright young Christian will be most keenly felt in the community in which he took so active a part in church, social and industrial affairs. More especially will it be felt when his comrades return to gladden the hearts and homes so lonely in their absence. Then indeed will the presence of him who sleeps in foreign lands be missed. Many of us have read with interest the splendid letters of Corporal Lund as they appeared in a Fremont daily paper. Through the courtesy of his parents we are permitted to give here an extract from a letter which he wrote on the eve of his departure from his own country, which clearly shows that he not only knew what he was going into, but that he was gloriously ready to lay any sacrifice upon the alter of his beloved country, even his life. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Dear Folks at Home: No doubt you have understood that my sending home of my surplus things meant that our time here was short. We have permission to tell our folks that we go soon, when we do not know, nor where. The time we enlisted men have waited for has come, as we were all tired of getting ready although it was necessary. We go realizing what it means, but knowing, as Americans, that we can do no less. We are proud to be volunteers, to wear the uniform of the defenders of the best flag on earth, and when the time comes I will do my part "over there" as you must do yours "over here." The Victory must be OURS! The only question is, how long will it take? This is my last letter on this side unless plans change. And now, Father, Mother, Sisters, remember that I am going to do my part and feel proud of your soldier boy. Good-bye, God bless you and keep you. LUND, LAWRENCE NOBLE ****************************************************************** Obituary - Sigrid Pearson Lund Services Held Here Monday For Mrs. Sigrid Lund Funeral services for Mrs. Sigrid Lund, 90, pioneer resident of the Burke community, were held Monday, April 3 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Burke with Rev. Charles Finney officiating. Singers were Pam Osnes, Crystal and Vicki Teel and Betty Purvis, accompanied by Frances Eide, organist. Interment was in Graceland Cemetery at Burke. Pallbearers were Dennis Dobesh, Larry and Richard Lund, Dean and Terry Ahlers and Gary Mailoux. Sigrid Lund was born Feb. 14, 1882 near Argo in Burt County, Nebraska, the eldest of four children of Mr. and Mrs. Per Pearson. In 1889 the family moved to a farm west of Wausa, Neb. It was here that she attended one of the first rural schools in that section of Knox, County. She lived there until her marriage to Erick Lund in October of 1902. They were the parents of nine children. In 1912 they moved to a farm 10 miles southwest of Burke and resided there until 1927 when they moved to a farm northwest of Burke where she resided until her death on March 30, 1972 at the Burke hospital, having reached the age of 90 years, one month and 16 days. At all times Mrs. Lund was very devoted to her family and church in her quiet and unassuming way. She was active in all church work as long as she was capable. She was a member of the Burke Methodist Church. Preceding her in death were her husband; one son, Paul; one daughter, Mrs. Adolph (Hanna) Ackerman; her parents; one brother and two sisters. Survivors include her children, Clarence, George, Harold and Leon, all of Burke, Mrs. Forest (Lillian) Suiter of Sedro Wolley, Wn., Mrs. Elmer (Florence) Dobesh of Gregory, and Mrs. Henry (Ruth) Ahlers of Naper; 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, other relatives and many friends. Lund, for over 60 years a resident of this community, passed away at the farm home of his brother, Andrew L. Lund, one- half mile south of Uehling, at about seven o'clock on Tuesday morning. Willie Lund, son of Mr. and Mrs. Larson Lund, was born December 22, 1880, in the Swaburg vicinity and passed away November 10, 1942, at the age of 61 years, 10 months and 18 days. He never married and most of his life was spent in the same community in which he was born and where he worked at farming, during the latter years for the brother with whom he made his home. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock from the Congregational church at Uehling with Rev. Darelle Barber officiating. Three brothers and one sister survive to mourn their brother's death; they being Lars L. of Hooper, Erick L. of Burke, S. D., Andrew L. of Uehling and Mrs. J. S. Johnson of Newman Grove, Nebr. Interment, under the direction of Wollmer & Warne, will be made in the Baptist cemetery near Uehling. Music was by Robbie McMaster of Hooper, who sang "How Great Thou Art" and "The Lord's Prayer" accompanied by Mrs. Willis Bopp. Interment was in the Elim Lutheran Cemetery at Swaburg. Carl Herbet Nelson, son of the Honorable Nels P. Nelson and Mary Caroline Bergquist, was born in Swaburg, April 29, 1891. He attended school in the former District No 54 School and was a 1911 graduate of the Nebraska University College of Agriculture at Lincoln. He enlisted in the United States Army and was a veteran of World War I. On Nov. 20, 1920, he married Miss Lenora Amos of Lincoln, a college classmate, and they resided on his farm in Swaburg, until her death on March 31, 1931. They were the parents of three children. In 1935, he was united in marriage to Miss Ruth Lund of Swaburg and they established their home in Fremont where he was a long time employee of the Plumfield Nursery, retiring after suffering a stoke and failing health. So as to be near the care of his daughter, the couple closed their Fremont home last fall and went to Racine, Wis., to spend the winter months. He died there on Tuesday of last week, at the age of 78. Preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Hjalmar and Philip, an infant sister and sisters, Hilma, Emily and Nellie (Mrs. G. A.Westergren), he is survived by his widow; daughter Charlotte Ann (Mrs. William J. Cote) of Racine, Wis.; two sons, Carl Jr. of San Francisco, Calif., and James of Erie, Pa.; six grandchildren;and one brother, Harry W. A. Nelson of Hooper.

Nelson, age 86, of Fremont, passed away September 1, 1996 at Fremont Area Medical Center in Fremont. He was born on August 24, 1910 in Wayne, Ne. He grew up in Wayne and lived most of his life on the West Coast. Henning lived in Omaha for a time before moving to Fremont. He had been residing at the Fremont Care Center. Henning is preceded in death by his parents, Swan and Mary (Lund) Nelson; and sisters, Gladys Hoogner and Nathalia Kunz. Nelson, 97, of Fremont died Sunday, May 30, 1999, at Arbor Manor. Ruth Lund was born June 8, 1901, at Wausa. She moved to the Hooper/Swaburg area as a young girl. She was a graduate of Hooper High School and attended Fremont Normal College for a year and business college for a a year. She taught school for a year and worked at a bank in Omaha for a year before her marriage. She married Carl H. Nelson Sr. Nov. 2, 1935, at Norfolk. She lived at Madison, coming to Fremont in 1939. He died March 17, 1970. She had been residing at Arbor Manor since March 21, 1998. She was a member of First Congregational Church, U.C.C. of Fremont, American Legion Post 340 Auxiliary, Violet Garden Club, University of Nebraska Extension Club, 8 & 40 Voiture 1018 Auxiliary, all of Fremont; Rebekah Lodge, and Fremont Area Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include: two sons, Carl H. Nelson Jr. of Lansdale, Pa., and James A. (and wife, Shirley Paden) Nelson of Erie, Pa.; daughter, Charlotte (Mrs. William) Cote of Racine, Wis.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. The memorial service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. The Rev. Donald L. Stoebner will officiate. There is no visitation, the body was cremated. The family will greet friends, 2-3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Elim Lutheran Cemetery at Swaburg. LUND ****************************************************************** Obituary - Swan Nelson The Hooper Sentinel April 6, 1944 Former Citizen Called by Death Swan Nelson Swan Nelson, 71, former well known farmer of the Swaburg community, passed away at a West Point hospital last week, Wednesday and funeral services were held Sunday at his home town of Wausa. Mr. Nelson, who was born May 19, 1869, removed from the Swaburg community to Wausa around 1907 and had engaged in farming and later in carpentry. His wife, the former Mary Lund, a sister of L. L. Lund of Hooper, passed away some 18 years ago. Surviving children are Mr. C. R. Otteman of Hooper; Mrs. Oswald Suhr of Scribner; Mrs. Rudolph ? , Concord; Mrs. Harold Haegaer, Laurel; Henning Nelson, Omaha. A sister, Mrs. Annette Gleason, of Tyndall, S. D. and two brothers, Andrew of Sioux City and Nels of Canada also survive. Mr. and Mrs. Otteman and family and the Oswald Suhrs, who spend much time at their father's bedside during his last illness attended the rites at Wausa Sunday. Otteman, 78, of Hooper died Friday in the Memorial Hospital of Dodge County of Fremont after a lengthy illness. Mr. Ottman was born Jan. 11, 1904 in rural Hooper. A longtime Hooper resident, Mr. Otteman farmed in Colorado from 1925-1929. Mr. Otteman was a State Farmer Insurance representative and Realtor and had been in business in Hooper for 45 years before retiring in September 1982 He was a member of the redeemer Lutheran Church of Hooper, the Hooper Commerical Club, the Hooper Fire Department, was a past member of the Sportsman's Club, a member of Eagles Club 200 of Fremaont and was a longtime member of the Fremont Golf Club. He served on the town board for 20 ears. He married Aylene Nelson on Feb. 4, 1925, in Wayne. She survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Glenn (Shirley) Gnuse of Nickerson; three sons, Robert, of Elgin, Ill., Glenn of Fremont, and De Wayne of Harlingen, Texas; six sisters, Mrs. William (Felecia) Schlotfeld of Dalton, Mrs. Hugh (Annie) Warden of Fullerton, Calif., Mrs. Earl (Nora) Fricke of Orange, Calif., Mrs. Eldon (Edna) Martin of Fremont, Mrs. Greg (Loretta)Jueden of Salem, Ore., and Mrs. Burley (Selma) Forrest of Riverside, Calif.; four brothers, Albert and Alvin of Fremont, Henry of Scribner and Julius of Hooper; 17 granchildren; three great-granddaughters. Otteman, 66, of Harlingen, Texas, formerly of Hooper, will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hooper. He died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. Otteman was born Jan. 20, 1934, in Dodge County. He grew up at Hooper and was a Hooper High School graduate. He served for four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After his discharge, he moved to Boulder, Colo. and attended the University of Colorado at Boulder. He married Myrtis "Marilyn" Brett in 1958 in Boulder. He moved to the Rio Grande Valley in Texas in 1959 and worked for J.L. Brett & Co. in the cotton business and later managed the citrus orchards, packing plant and Mo-Rose Gift Citrus Co. at Rancho Viejo near Olmito, Texas. He then became a real estate broker and formed Otteman Realty and Universal Realty. He was a member of the Harlingen Board of Realtors, the Texas Association of Realtors and National Association of Realtors. He was certified as an accredited land consultant and Accredited Farm Land Manager (A.F.L.M.) He was a member of the Realtors Institute of Texas; Farm and Land Institute; International Real Estate Federation; the Real Estate Aviation Council and the Rio Grande Apartment Association. He was elected director of the Texas Association of Realtors (T.A.R.), board of realtors in 1971 and also served as vice president in 1973 and president of the board of directors in 1974. Otteman also served as president of the Harlingen Board of Realtors in 1974 and was governor/liaison of the Farm & Land Institute from 1975-77 and again in 1979-80. He was publications committee chairman of the Farm & Land Institute (FLI) in 1977. He was a member of the FLI of the Texas Chapter 22, where he served as vice president of Region 7 in 1976-77; secretary in 1979, first vice president in 1980, and president in 1981-82, and later received an award for Broker of the Year in 1982. He received an outstanding service award in 1986 while serving as regional vice president of the Realtors Land Institute. For many years, he was on-site manager of El Mercado Mall and owned and operated the Health Garden Health Food Store in Harlingen. Otteman, 73, of Fremont will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fremont. He died Friday, March 18, 2005, at Fremont Area Medical Center. He was born Oct. 28, 1931, on a farm four miles southwest of Hooper. He lived on the family farm until moving to Hooper in 1938. He was a 1948 graduate of Hooper High School and attended Wayne State College for two years. He worked for Nebraska Crib and Silo in Fremont and then became an agent for State Farm Mutual Insurance Company. He operated Glenn N. Otteman State Farm Insurance in Arlington and then in Fremont for over 50 years. Glenn married Lois Dew on Aug. 5, 1950, in Council Bluffs. The couple raised four children. They later divorced. He then married Elaine M. Heese on Feb. 14, 1981, in Hawaii. Survivors include: his wife; two sons, Randy (and wife, Wini) Otteman of Mission Viejo, Calif. and Gary (and wife, Karen) Otteman of Omaha; two daughters, Linda (Mrs. Richard) Florence of Fremont and Robyn (Mrs. Dave) Bingham of Fort Collins, Colo.; a brother, Robert Otteman of Punta Gorda, Fla.; a sister, Shirley (Mrs. Glenn) Gnuse of Nickerson; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Otteman of Harlingen, Texas; 14 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. OTTEMAN, LOIS ****************************************************************** Obituary - Oswald Suhr The Hooper Sentinel September 24, 159 Oswald Suhr Succumbs to Heart Attack Oswald Suhr, 56, died of a heart attack at his home near Scribner on Thursday. Funeral services were held Sunday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Hugo Welchert of Omaha, and the Rev. Lester Lamm officiating. Music was by LeRoy Roemer, Loran Pfeiffer, Leslie Von Seggern and Harvey Haseman with Mrs. Delbert Moeller as organist. Pallbearers were William Moseman Sr., Henry Luecking, Vernon Von Seggern, Orville Von Seggern, Arthur Popken and Norman Popken. Interment was in St. Paul's Cemetery. Mr. Suhr was born Nov. 2, 1902, north of Hooper. He attended Wayne State Teachers College, and was a life member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He served as secretary of the church council for six years and was a member of the Lutheran Brotherhood, Dodge County Fair Board, and was active in community affairs. On February 10, 1926, he married Nellie Nelson in Wayne. The lived in Wayne for three years, and moved to a farm northwest of Hooper. He is survived by his wife; daughters, Nadine (Mrs, Russel Johnson) and Norma Lee (Mrs. Delwyn Helgenberger) both of Scribner; his mother, Mrs. Gesine Suhr of Plano, Ill.; one brother, Richard Suhr of Filer, Idaho; two sisters, Irene (Mrs. Charlie Hein) of Fremont and Mildred (Mrs. Melvin Johnson) of Plano, Ill.; and six grandchildren. His father, a son, a sister and two grandsons preceded him in death. Wollmer & Warne Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
