Obituary - Phillip Henry Bergquist
The Hooper Sentinel
October 30, 1941
Services Held For P. H. Bergquist
Swaburg - Funeral services for Phillip H. Bergquist, who passed
away at his home in Fremont Thursday afternoon following a
paralytic stroke suffered Wednesday night, were held from the
Wollmer & Warne mortuary at Hooper Sunday afternoon with the formal
service at the Elim Lutheran church at Swaburg. Dr. Alfred O.
Frank, pastor of the Salem Lutheran church at Fremont, was the
officiating clergyman. Mrs. Marvin Norberg presided at the organ
and accompanied the church male quartet, composed of Martin Olson,
John and Garfield Monson and Harry G. Andersen in two song
selections and also Mr. Andersen in the requested hymn, "Under His
Wing."
There was a profuse offering of flowers and a memorial gift to the
Bethpage Mission at Axtell, Nebr., from the Elim Lutheran Ladies
Aid society. Included among the very large attendance were nearly
a hundred relatives and friends from Omaha, Auburn, Oakland, Lyons,
Fremont, Scribner and Hooper.
The remains were interred in the family lot in the Elim cemetery.
The pallbearers were Ed F. Olson, Dr. Chris W. Johnson and Jess
Landholm of Fremont, Albert Soderling of Uehling and John
Frederikson and George Egbers of Swaburg.
Philip Henry Bergquist, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Bergquist,
prominent pioneer settlers of the Swaburg neighborhood, was born in
Swaburg on January 1, 1879, and passed away at Fremont on October
23, 1941, at the age of 62 years, 9 months and 22 days.
When a small boy his parents moved to Oakland and he completed his
education in the public schools there. Later they returned to the
farm in Swaburg and on December 22, 1906, he was united in marriage
to Miss Amelia Uehling of Hooper. They resided in Swaburg and in
the Hooper vicinity and then moved to Santa Ana Calif., where they
were engaged in the grocery business. They returned to the home
farm in Swaburg about 23 years ago, and except for a number of
years' residence in Uehling, where he operated a produce store,
this community was their home until two years ago when due to
failing health, they retired and moved to Fremont to make their
home.
Always interested in the welfare of his community, Mr. Bergquist
identified himself as a citizen of the highest character. He held
membership in the Elim Lutheran church at Swaburg and for several
years served the Swaburg school district as director of the school
board. Possessed of an outstandingly friendly personality, he made
for himself many lasting friendships and enjoyed a wide
acquaintance throughout this territory.
Remaining to mourn the passing of this devoted husband and loving
father is the wife and only child, the daughter, Phyllis Louise,
Mrs. Edwin C. Moeller of Portland, Oregon. Surviving him also is
one granddaughter, Patricia Ann Moeller, and four sisters, Mrs.
Jennie Gustavson of Omaha, Mrs. Arden Hanson of Oakland, and Mrs.
J. F. Briggs and Miss Esther Bergquist of Fremont, and aged uncle,
Charles E. Ohlson, of Oakland, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Moeller and little daughter arrived Saturday evening from
Portland.

Early Thursday morning the messenger of death visited the home of
Oswald F. Uehling and called away his beloved wife, Anna, at the
age of twenty-two years.
Only eighteen months ago they were united in the holy bonds of
wedlock, and began life together under the most favorable
circumstances. A year after their marriage as she had entered upon
the duties of motherhood the dreaded disease consumption set in and
although every effort was made by medical treatment to check the
progress of the disease, she died after six months suffering.
Deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Casper Miller and was
born and raised in Dodge Co. Being of an amiable disposition and
unblemished character, had won for herself a hosts of friends by
whom she will be sadly missed.
The funeral services were held in St. Johns Lutheran Church, where
she had been baptized and confirmed. The high esteem in which she
was held in the neighborhood was evidenced by the fact that the
attendance at her funeral was on of the largest ever held in the
country.

Well Known Hooper Man Dies at Crowell
Heart trouble, that followed a siege of illness, caused the death
of August J. Uehling at Crowell at 5 o'clock last Thursday morning,
April 5, at the age of 45 years, 1 month and 20 days. Although he
had been ailing for sometime his condition was not considered
critical, so notice of his death came as a surprise and shock to
Hooper relatives and friends.
Mr. Uehling was a native of this vicinity, having been born on
February 6, 1878, on the farm of his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs.
John Uehling, 4 1/2 miles west of Hooper. Here he spent his
boyhood days and grew to manhood and became very well known in our
circle of citizenship, deserving the respect that was shown him by
his acquaintances. On January 15, 1902, he was united in marriage
to Miss Lenora Weigle, who survives him, and who, with the four
sons and six daughters born to this union, are now cast in the
darkness of bereavement in the loss of a dutiful and devoted
husband and father, and who have the deep heartfelt sympathy of
this community. His death is also mourned by one brother and four
sisters, O. F. Uehling, Mrs. A. H. Keller and Mrs. P. H. Bergquist
of Hooper, Mrs. H. P. Marquardt of Fremont and Mrs. Edward Realph
of Crowell, and also by his step mother, Mrs. John Uehling, and
step sister, Mrs. C. E. Sauers of Santa Ana, Calif. After his
marriage this vicinity remained his home for several years, he and
family moving to Crowell about eight years ago.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon, first with services at 12:30
at the Crowell home, the funeral party then coming overland to
Hooper for services at two o'clock at Zions Lutheran church, the
pastor Rev. J. Schrader conducting them at both places. Interment
was made in the Hooper cemetery.

Mangled Body of Young Man Found West of Hooper
This place was thrown into considerable excitement yesterday
morning when news was spread about, that the mangled body of a man
had been found along the railroad track one half mile west of town.
The gruesome discovery was made by Miss Frieda Windhusen and
sister, who were coming from home to attend school, who immediately
notified agent C. C. Cushman. As the body was in terribly mangled
condition identification would have been impossible but for a pass
book found nearby. This bore the name of the late August J. Uehling
of Crowell, and a former Hooper resident. With the discovery of
this book it was soon learned that a son Francis, had been in this
community the past couple of weeks and had on Tuesday started to
work at the brickyard. Further identification then proved that the
body was that of this young man.
How and when the accident happened is unknown, but it is presumed
that it happened sometime after 10 o'clock Tuesday night as that
was the last seen of him after making inquiries at the depot about
trains and at that time it was evident he was endeavoring to go to
his home at Crowell. The remains were gathered up and brought to
Bucholz Bros. undertaking parlors to await the arrival of the
Mother; Gus Weigle having gone to Crowell for her. On her arrival
here at noon, arrangements were made for burial that afternoon in
the Hooper Cemetery beside the body of the father who died last
year. Services were conducted by Rev. Duhrkop of Zions Lutheran
Church.
The sudden and shocking death of this young man who was but 17
years of age, comes as a hard blow to the family, as since the
death of the father he had been a great help in contributing to the
maintenance of the family. He was born in this vicinity and began
his school life in our public schools. He was generally well liked
by all who knew him as a friend and was an industrious boy. He was
survived by his mother, three brothers and six sisters, who have
the deep sympathy of the entire community in their sorrowful
affliction.
