Biography - History of William and Martha (Stover) Jacobs
We believe Mother and Dad got acquainted at the wedding and dance,
of Herman Schellstede and Matilda Stover, on May 14 1925. Matilda
was Mother’s sister. Dad and Mother probably did know each other,
as Mother was confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Okarche at the age
of 17. This was Dad’s home church. They were married May 12, 1926,
at the Lutheran church in Okarche. They lived on the Jacobs home
place, with Dad’s parents until Grandpa bought a home in Okarche.
All three children were born on the farm at Okarche. Mother became
quite ill in 1939 with blood poisoning. Dolores and Dorothy lived
with Aunt Mollie, Aunt Katie, and Grandpa for some time because Dad
couldn’t do it by himself. Aunt Katie stayed for a period of time
at the home after Mother finally got out of the hospital. In 1941,
the family moved to Piedmont as the estate was settled on Dad’s
family home place. Thru the help of Mother’s family again, Dad was
able to get started farming.
All the children graduated from high school at Piedmont.
In 1946, Verden was severely burned in a tractor fire, and had a
history of high blood pressure from that time.
Dad a a slight heart attack in 1960, and 1961, they retired to El
Reno. Mother had severe strokes in 1973 which left her unable to do
for herself. Dad was so faithful and dedicated to her during the 7
years of her illness. He went to the nursing home each day to feed
her, and care for her. His sister, Ida Schieber, was in the same
room most of those years, so he and Uncle Fred spent many days
together there. Shortly after Mother passed on in 1980, Dad was
diagnosed with cancer. He lived 13 months after Mother. Our
brother, Verden died in between with a heart attack.
We are very thankful for our Christian upbringing and the sacrifices
which Mother ad Dad made. We always attended church together,
unless the roads were too bad to go. Church life and Christian
ideals were most important to both of them.

Larson The Hooper Sentinel December, 29, 1927 Swaburg Community saddened by Death of O. Larson The Swaburg community was shocked and greatly saddened on Christmas morning upon learning of the sudden death of one of its most prominent and much esteemed citizens, Oliver O. Larson. Mr. Larson, who was apparently in his usual good health, had made a trip to Uehling, Saturday, to spend the evening. At eleven o'clock, he began to make preparations to return home when he was suddenly stricken with a heart attack, which was so severe that it was impossible to take him to his home, so he was removed to the home of his sister, Mrs. A. J. W. Koehler. He regained consciousness and was able to converse with the attending physician and with those about him, but later suffered a second attack and the final summons came at 5:50 o'clock, just at the dawning of Christmas day. Oliver O. Larson, the oldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Larson, was born on the homestead one-half mile south of Uehling, on July 27, 1867, and passed away at Uehling on December 25, 1927, at the age of 60 years, 4 months and 28 days. He was baptized in the home of his parents by a Mission pastor and in his youth taught a class in Sunday School for several years. He attended the Fremont Norman College and was one of Swaburg's pioneer school masters. On March 20, 1893, he was united in marriage to Miss Mattie Stover, at West Point, and they established their first home in Cuming Township in Burt County, later moving to Swaburg which has since been the family home. The deceased, who was a man of keen intellect, was one of Swaburg's most public-spirited citizens, being interested in all movements pertaining to the welfare of the community. He was possessed of a jovial and congenial personality and was a good friend and neighbor, one who will be greatly missed in Swaburg's circle of citizenry. Mr. Larson took an active part in politics and was widely known throughout Dodge county, having been a candidate for assessor several years ago, when he polled a large vote of confidence from his friends. For the past several years he had been the very efficient assessor for Logan township, which office he held at the time of his demise. When a resident of Burt county in the early days, he held a similar office there. He was a man of integrity, and always earned the special commendation of his superior officers in the work. He was also much interested in school affairs, and for many years served as the able director of the Swaburg school district. There remain to mourn his passing, the wife and seven children, Gertrude (Mrs. D. E. Conklin) of Craig; Walter, of Uehling; Luella (Mrs. Harry Wagner) of Hooper; and John, Lillian, Blanche and Elmer, of Swaburg. Surviving him also are two grandsons and four brothers, Daniel of Fremont; Andrew, of Hooper; Harvey, of Swaburg; and Ed. of Chicago; and four sisters, Mrs. W. H. Realph, of Swaburg; Mrs. A. J. W. Koehler, of Uehling; Mrs. Carl Kammerer of North Bend; Mrs. Bert Woodruff, of Julesburg, Colorado. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon with a short service at the late home, followed by the formal service at the Elim Lutheran church, interment being made in the family lot in the church cemetery. The passing of this respected citizen is made double sad, coming at the Christmas season, his death occurring also on the birthday anniversary of the daughter Blanche. Before his marriage Oliver was a school teacher, and after his marriage he was a farmer. His additional interests included being a Logan Precinct appraiser, a 1910 US Census taker, a violin player and an amateur photographer. Mattie Gesina Stover was born west of Logan Creek in Dodge County, Nebraska on March 15, 1870 to Heinrich and Anna Marie (Gerdsen) Stover. Mattie was the only child of Heinrich and Anna Marie Stover to be born in the USA, the other children; John Henry (1861-1951), John Bernhardt (1863-1948), and Kate Pueppka (1867-1945) were born in Oldenburg, Germany. The Stover family emigrated to the USA in 1870. Mattie's father, Heinrich Stover, died on July 6, 1875, and is buried at St. Paul's Cemetery north of Hooper, NE. Larson and Mattie Gesina Stover were married on March 20, 1893 at West Point, Cuming County, Nebraska. The marriage was performed by Cuming County Judge Franklin Manning and witnessed by C. L. Both spoke the native language of their parents while at home, but after her marriage Mattie never spoke German again. Oliver and Mattie farmed in Burt County near the present town of Uehling for several years. In June, 1902 Oliver and Mattie Larson purchased a 130 acre farm one mile south of Elim Lutheran Church and 3/4 of a mile east in Section 25 from John Soll for $59 an acre. They moved onto this farm in the spring of 1903. After several years the family was too large for the farm house and the house was enlarged. The carpenter that did the work was Lynn Bullock. After Mattie's death the farm was sold to settle the estate and the farm was purchased by Nels Nelson. The farm house was destroyed by fire in 1991. STOVER, FRED W. ****************************************************************** Biography - (Henry) Heinrich Herman Carl Stover Family History The Stover and Wiedemann families had lived in the same vicinity in Germany, Nebrska and Oklahoma. They were very well acquainted. March 3, 1913, was a special day for (Kate) Katherine Paulina Matilda Wiedemann, and (Henry) Heinrich Herman Carl Stover. They were united in marriage in El Reno, Oklahoma by Pastor Hossick, a Lutheran minister. Uncle (Dick) Diedrich, mother's brother and Aunt (Mollie) Amelia Stover, dad's sister, were to witness the occasion. They were to make their home on Grandpa (John) Johann B. Stover's farm. A three room hous had been made in to a cozy home. Mr. & Mrs. Frank Fisher, Mr. & Mrs. Cain Rowland, and Mr. & Mrs. Tom Tennery were their close neighbors. Their first son (Carl) was born March 5, 1914. He was only to live 6 months. Cholera infantum, an acute infectious disiase, casused his death. During World War I, the influenza epicemic swept the comminity. Mother was very ill with it. The doctor gave her no chance to survive. She was given care by loving relatives and friends in her home and thus recovered. Emma, Herman, and Paul were born at this location. Henry and Kate then purchased their own farm from Rufus and Mattie Connell in 1920 for $6,000. This was be be their home throgh the years. A four room house was built by Lee Jones. It was unfinished when they moved in. After several month our parnts did the lathing. This was done to support the plaster. Lawrence and Bert Randall then did the plastering. Dad and Uncle Dick (Mother's brother) finished the woodwork. Mother and Dad's dreams of adding a second floor for another bedroom and living room to the west was never realized. At this home Otto, Raymond and Helen were born. There were many happy occasions including playing horse-shoe and croquet for recreation during the warm seasons. Checkers and carom (minature pool) were winter time enterainment. Mother and Dad enjoyed singing hymns together while Mother accompained on the organ. The bad times were there, too. A hail storm in 1920 comletely destroyed the wheat and oat crops. The following year the green bugs devoured the crop. It yielded 2 or 3 bushel per acre. Nine to twelve bushels weere considered an average crop. In 1931, our parents purchased another farm, SO/4, Sec, 34, Top 14, R6 for $6525. Mother's health began to fail. She had developed a condition called Pernicious Anemia, which was fatal Feb. 3, 1933. Funeral services were held at the home by Pastor E. H. Pittelko. The church service was officiated by pastor F. C. Otto at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Okarche, Okla. Again, relatives and friends helped us through this very difficult time. We had a father that was very devoted to his children. He continued to make a home for three teenagers, an eleven, nine and six year old. Herman, Paul, and Raymond served in World WarII. Their lives were spared and all three returned home safely. Aunt Mollie and Grandpa (John) Johann B. Stover were making their home together on the very place Grandpa had bought when coming to Oklahoma. Grandpa was now failing in health, so our dad moved into their home, helping to care for Grandpa. Thus Dad retired from farming in 1946. In 1948, Grandpa died. Dad and Aunt Mollie continued to live there. They enjoyed company and visiting relatives and friends. Then came the time Dad was losing his eye sight, caused by a diabetic condition. STOVER, JOHANNN HEINRICH ****************************************************************** Biography - History of (John) Johann Bernhardt Stover Grandpa (John) Bernhardt Stover arrived in Nebraska with his family from Germany at the age of about four. Anna Marie (Wieting) Stover, also from German, followed her brother Herman Wieting and half-sister Katherine (Wieting) Egbers at the age of twenty. January 1, 1886, Grandpa, from Cumming County, Nebraska bought the SW1/4, Sec 14, Twp 21, Rg 3n, East of the Sixth Principal Merdian, Stanton Co., Neb. for the sum of $1000.00 from Emily J. Briggs. The down payment was $250.00 and the same sum for the first and second year. Thereafter $270.00 plus interest was paid annually. Their first child (Henry) was born there. The winters being so severe, they sold their property and farm. Grandpa traveled to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma by train. He spent several weeks with the Kuhlmann's who lived on the land that is now Tinker Field Air Force Base, OKC. Grandpa traveled by team and wagon looking for a farm. He bought Homestad NW 1/4, Sec 2, Twp13N, Rg 6W, I.M. He was the first settler. The sale was made March 15, 1892, at $900.00 for 162.56 Acres. It as finalized at the Land Office at Kingfisher, Okalahoma. The farm was bought from "Homestead-Testimony of Claimants.". Now Grandma and her young son (Henry) came to Oklahoma to join Grandpa. On the farm stood a small house. This was their home until a (22x26) two story house was build by Diedrich Luschen. They moved in on October, 1892. By 1899 the improvements consisted of the house, barn, granary, well, and an orchard. These were valued at $600.00. Amelia, Matilda, Katherine, Marhta, and John were born here. Ernst and Dick Wiedemenn built another barn in 1910 at a cost of $500.00 for material and labor. After 1914, a larger two story house was built by Carson Jennings. Lumber was bought from Brownlee Lumber, Richland, Oklahoma. Both buildings are still in place. Several trips were made to Nebraska by train. Relatives from Nebraska returned their visits. Their neighbors were the John Huggler's, L. G. Meigs', Henry Hollman's, Sam Carey's and Ernest Kessler's. All neighborhood children attended the Pleasant Hill School. Church services were held at the school house by several diferent denominations. Few and far between were the trips to El Reno for business. Grandpa weould start in the early hours of the morning and return home the folowing morning. On one occasion, Grandma, home alone with their chldren was very frightened. She saw two Indians looking in at the window. After looking in, they were on their way causing no trouble. There was the sad time when Grandma read of her mother's death in a German published newpaper before she received word from her relatives. At the time prohibition was to be voted on, one German fellow living near them (the language being a barrier) walked to Piedmont to vote. He boasted how he had stamped out probibition. Instead, he had voted for prohibition. Grandma passed away in 1929. Services were held at the Methodist Church, Piedmont, Oklahoma by Rev. T. C. Otte, a Lutheran minister. This left Grandpa with two daughters, Amelia and Katherine, and one son, John, in the home. In 1935, Grandpa lost four horses, one colt, and two cows struck by lighting. There was also the excitement of a new 1936 Tudor Ford Sedan car bought for $400.00. Two gallons of antifreeze then cost $15.00 Herman, Paul, and Otto Stover each spent a winter (1933 thru 1936) with Grandpa doing the farming, livestock feeding, and chores. Grandpa died in 1948. Rev. Paul Hover officiated at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Okarche, Oklahoma. We have so many precious memories of our grandparents to numerous to mention. Grandma with her generous heart and Grandpa, a quiet, soft spoken man were both very kind. We will never forget them. We are most grateful for a Christian heritage. Wagner of Hooper Badly Burned in Blast Explosion Is Cause of Injury to Fire Chief Hooper, Nov. 10 - Harry M. Wagner, chief of the Hooper volunteer fire department, was seriously burned Sunday morning by a mysterious explosion in a burning home. The explosion occurred in the Frank H. Nelson home shortly after 11:30 o'clock Sunday morning, when Wagner and other volunteer firemen were fighting flames that threatened to destroy the residence. The fire chief was standing on the roof of the kitchen which adjoins the main building. A window near him was shattered, and fragments were thrown a distance of 50 feet. The roof of the house was raised a foot in the air, and when it dropped back the whole building appeared to bulge out. Wagner sustained burns on the left side of his body and head, his left eye was closed, and his left hand and arm were painfully scorched. The cause of the explosion is not known. The fire is believed to have started in a small clothes closet. The house was heated by a coal stove, and there was fire in the stove, but there were no indications that this figured in either the origin of the fire or the subsequent explosion. Mrs. Nelson and a daughter were at church at the time. The fire was discovered by Mr. Nelson while he was standing on the street a short distance away talking to a friend. By the time firemen arrived the blaze was gaining great headway. Note - This item was typed from a clipping of the newspaper item and was sent to me by Betty Shaffer McMaster in 1991. ![]()
