Dedication Page

CHARLES HENRY CREST born 5 March 1863 in Equality, Gallatin, Illinois, was killed instantly Monday, 27 September 1909 by a fall of rock and slate while at work in the West Side Coal Mine located near Equality. He left behind 4 sons ages 9 to 19 years (Denzil, Vernon, Frank, Robert). Charles was the son of ANTHONY CREST (originally DeGroesch) who was born in Baden, Germany and MARY ANN OBERLY born in Alsace, France. Charles married 24 June 1888 in Equality, MINNIE ADDISON. Minnie was born 8 February 1870 (Equality) and died 10 November 1903 (Equality). She was the daughter of SIDNEY ADDISON and NANCY GATEWOOD (daughter of SENATOR WILLIAM JEFFERSON GATEWOOD and ELEWESA HUBBARD). Elewesa was the daughter of ADOLPHUS F HUBBARD who was active in Gallatin county politics from about 1813 to 1826). The photos are of Charles (taken about 1888) and the West Side Coal Mine (1914 on back of photo). He is my Great Grandfather.
