CHARLES EVERETT SPILLER was born in Danville, Montgomery Co., TX on 8 Dec 1876, the son of William Fielding Spiller and Elizabeth Catherine Irvine. By 1898 his family had settled in a new home called 'Esperanza', just east of Danville, near present-day Hwy. 75. In 1880, he is listed as a sawmill owner, living in Precinct 1, Res. 343. He employed eight people. On 4 Nov 1906 he married Bertha "Bird" Susan Wallace, daughter of John Franklin Wallace and Nancy Carolina Weisinger. In 1907, he and W. F. Spiller, his father, sold more than 2.2 million feet of stumpage to Big Tree Lumber Company, which had a plant at Alonso, two or three miles north of Esperanza, just across the Walker Co., TX line. In 1895, the Cameron Herald, Milam Co., TX, Vol. 13, No. 48, dated Thursday, 6 Jun 1895, reported a visit from Charlie Spiller who had been attending Southwestern University at Georgetown. He became a Physician. After he and Bertha Susan married, they settled in Willis. In the family, he was called "Uncle Doc." Charles passed away on July 19, 1923.
