IREDELL REDING

Buried Danville Cemetery

Willis, Texas

(Originally Danville, Texas)

Iredell Reding was born on 7 October 1791 in Randolph County, North Carolina, the son of Robert Reding and Anne Needham.

He moved with his parents at an early age to Davidson County, Tennessee. Little is known about his early life. It is thought that he may have been married in his young adulthood, but his first proven marriage was to Martha (Patsy) Hallum, daughter of James Hallum and Ann Baker. They were married 7 October 1819 in Davidson County.

By 1825, the couple had moved to Fayette County, Tennessee. They lived on the North Fork of the Wolf River. Patsy died 11 October 1826, leaving four young children. Iredell subsequently married Mrs. Nancy Brooks Mayfield, by whom he had two more children. She was the daughter of John Brooks, and sister of Samuel C. Brooks.

Iredell migrated to Texas in 1836 and received a first class headright certificate even though he was still counted on the tax rolls in Fayette County. He became the first signer on a petition to create Houston County from Nacogdoches County, Texas. He was living at the time in the community of Mustang Prairie.

By 1840, the family had moved to Montgomery County, Texas, where they settled near Danville. Iredell affiliated with the Montgomery Lodge in 1854 and with the San Jacinto Lodge of Danville in 1856.

Other members of his family also settled in Texas. His half-brother, John Baker Reding, is also buried in this cemetery.

Iredell Reding died 9 May 1864 in the vicinity of Danville and has a large number of descendants in Texas.

One of his daughters was Hulda Reding, wife of John Whitten Barrett.

Another daughter was Nancy Reding, wife of Jonathan Stark Collard. She is buried in the same plot as her father.

A son, William Monroe Reding, is also buried in Shepard Hill Cemetery.
