James Henry Hall was born in Newberry District, South Carolina in 1824, the son of John Hall and Barbara Wicker. He is on the 1850 Montgomery County, TX census in the J. F. Arnette household. He married Sarah Ann George around 1856 and they had two sons, John Green and James Marion. Sarah Ann died in childbirth with Barbary Elizabeth about 1863. Barbary died three months later.

James Henry married Mary Jane Wester on 31 Jan 1869 in Walker Co., TX. The marriage was performed by Allen George Samuel (1797-1879). She was enumerated on the 1850 Montgomery County census, as a two-month-old infant in the home of her parents, Matthew Wester and Martha (Johnson) Wester. James Henry and Mary Jane were the parents of 10 children: Esther Catherine (who later married Nehemiah Jackson Samuel), Ruth, Theodocia Vandaily, Benjamin Franklin "Frank," Job Henry, Naomi Missouri, Sarah Jane "Sally," Calvin Coke, Martha Ellen "Mattie," and Sadie.

Mary Jane died in childbirth with Sadie, who also died, in 1890.

James Henry Hall served in the Confederate army as a member of the Danville Mounted Riflemen under Captain S. D. Wooldridge. He was a farmer and the family lived on FM 1375 in Walker County.

He died in 1905 at the age of 80, having outlived both of his wives and three of his 13 children. He is buried between his wives at the Danville Cemetery. Their graves are not marked. His daughter Sarah Jane "Sally" Hall Selman (1880-1937) and her daughter Darlene Selman Valdez (abt. 1910-1935) are also buried at Danville in unmarked graves.
