Mary Lucy Spiller was born on 7 June 1883 in Danville, Montgomery Co., TX. She was one of the twelve children born to William Fielding Spiller and wife, Elizabeth Catherine Irvine. Her paternal grandparents were George Anderson Spiller and Jemima Susanna "Susan" Diuguid. Paternal great grandparents were George Spiller and Mary "Polly" Spears of Buckingham Co., Virginia. Her maternal grandparents were Peter Belles Irvine and Minerva Angelia Tabor. Her maternal great-grandparents were Benjamin Fielding Irvine and Mary "Polly" Belles; Rev. Isaac Tabor and Susannah Bullock. Mary's grandparents and great-grandparents were all early settlers that resided in Danville. All of them, with the exception of Rev. Isaac Tabor, are buried in Old Danville Cemetery (aka Shepard Hill). Mary was born at the original Spiller home on property which was located near the corner of Danville Road and Shepard Hill Road. When Mary was about 15 (1898) her family built a new home on the east side of old Hwy 75, north of Willis, called Esperanza. Esperanza was a cotton and tobacco plantation complete with tobacco barns, store, cotton gin, sawmill, a post office and a railroad depot.

On 27 Jul 1904, Mary wed Alexander Elton Garrett a young, handsome tobacco grower who had come to Esperanza ca. 1895 to work for Mary's father. Mary and Alex lived in a house near Esperanza and had three children, Elizabeth Delilah, (1905-1905), Charles Fielding (1906-1932) and Irma Louise (1908-1996). They later moved into Willis so that daughter, Irma Louise, could attend Willis High School. Probably ca. 1940's, she and Alex moved back into her childhood home, Esperanza, and lived there with her sister, Bess Spiller. Her sister, Irma Spiller Tyree, lived in another home on the property. Alex died on 2 Jun 1961 at a hospital in Conroe. Around 1965, Mary went to Beaumont to live with her daughter, Irma Louise and her husband, John Butler Terrell. She began having small strokes and died in Beaumont on 1 Sep 1967. She is buried in the Spiller plot surrounded by her ancestors, parents, some of her siblings, her husband, daughter, Irma Louise (Garrett) Terrell, son-in-law, John Butler Terrell, grand-daughter, Mary Ann (Terrell) Mills, and many other relatives.
