JAMES B. CAPERTON

Buried Danville Cemetery

Willis, Texas

(Originally Danville, Texas)

JAMES B. CAPERTON was born Dec, 1819. He was married to Nancy Cannon Brooks (1822-1867), daughter of Samuel C. Brooks, on 15 Oct 1844 in Fayette Co., TN. In 1850, they are found on the Winston Co., MS census, p. 353. James is aged 31, born in TN; Nancy is aged 28, also born in TN. A source on the internet through the Caperton Family Genealogy Forum tells that James died in a dual. A DAR application document filed by great grand-daughter, Daphne Scott Cook, reports that "he [James]is buried in the [Danville]cemetery there at the side of Samuel C. Brooks, but only his name remains on the tombstone, the part of the stone containing his birth and death dates having been destroyed." However, she states that James and his family moved to Old Danville where he died in 1857. There is no tombstone standing for James and it is not included in the survey done of the cemetery in 1970s, however a partial piece of stone has been found near the burial of Samuel C. Brooks and further excavations need to be done to determine if this might be James Caperton's stone. The stone at the top of the photo below is Samuel C. Brooks and the stone at the bottom has not been identified yet. Could this be part of James Caperton's headstone?

Nancy and their children are found on the 1860 census living with her father, Samuel C. Brooks. She later remarried to James W. Moore in Walker Co., TX on 4 Feb 1861.(DAR document image contributed by Karen Hett).

Further research has shown that Nancy Cannon Brooks Caperton Moore was buried in Moore's Grove Cemetery, Walker Co., TX; subsequently moved in the 1950's to the East Sandy Cemetery in Walker Co., TX. (Information submitted by Lynna Kay Shuffield)
