Born Jan. 1, 1794
Died Oct. 17, 1861

Samuel C. Brooks' tombstone was listed in the 1981 publication of "Montgomery County Texas Cemeteries, Vol. IV" on page 4. This survey of Danville Cemetery was taken on 28 April 1978 by Oveta and Horace Wright. At the time this webpage was created, the only remaining evidence of Samuel's burial was his footstone.

In May of 2006, the cemetery caretaker, Randy Brown, noticed a small piece of cement sticking up through the grass. After some excavation, the headstone of Samuel C. Brooks was found! As you can see, it is in pieces and further excavation needs to be done to uncover the other pieces. We're thrilled to find this headstone which we thought had been stolen by vandals. More pictures will be posted when this work is done.

*Update* 2 June 2007. The lower part of Samuel's stone was excavated and will be reset one day soon. Notice the Mason's symbol.

Samuel Clifford Brooks was born January 1, 1794 in Virginia, the son of John Brooks and Ann (Nancy) Stuart. His parents moved from Virginia to Kentucky and then to Williamson County, Tennessee. In 1816, Samuel enlisted in 2nd Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers and served to 1818. On August 21, 1819, he married Elizabeth Hailey. They moved to Fayette County, Tennessee, in about 1826, where his sister, Mrs. Nancy Brooks Mayfield, had married Iredell Reding.

After Elizabeths death, Samuel married Eizabeth J. Tatum on March 26, 1843, in Fayette County. Shortly after 1850, Samuel and Elizabeth moved to Walker County, Texas. He served as a Mason in 1853 and served as Treasurer of San Jacinto Lodge No. 106 AF and AM in 1856. He died at Danville October 17, 1861.
One of Samuel's sons, Andrew Jackson Brooks, died during the Civil War at the Battle of Arkansas Post.
