DECEMBER 21, 1900

Dallas, Dallas Co., Tex. -- My Dear Santa Claus: I thought I would write to you early this year and avoid the awful rush. All on the green earth I want for Christmas is a little pony, a cart, a sidesaddle, saddle so I can vary the way of riding, and then I would be very glad indeed if you would bring an airship that can take me up to dizzy heights so I can view Dallas from the clouds. If I am not asking too much, dear Santa, I would like a kinetoscope, with directions how to make the films that go in it. I want to give a public exhibition of some of the exciting scenes enacted on St. Louis street. I do not know my exact age, but would judge that I am somewhere between 5 and 14. Bring my sisters and brother something. I do not think grandma and papa and mama are particular about what you bring them, but for papa let me suggest that you bring that inevitable cup and saucer -- he has gotten one for the past ten years. Bring a horse doctor along with you to see what is the matter with Sawanie's foot. Made keeps well and looks fine, and dear little Rover is looking forward to the time when he will get something nice from you. I hope you will not think me selfish. Goodby, dear Santa, with a hundred kisses and a big hug for your dear old self. I am your devoted and hopeful friend,

DECEMBER 23, 1900

For The News.

MRS. SANTY.

Most folks think that old Santy
Makes all of the little folks toys,
That the poor old man works dreadfully hard
To give them these coveted joys,
They think he sits up past his bed-time,
Working on wonderful things,
There, in his queerest of work-shops,
Full of dollies and wagons and swings.

But the truth is that old Mrs. Santy,
That dearest of women -- today
Works while the old man is snoring --
She just keeps pegging away,
Patiently mending and making,
(Her spectacles slightly askew);
By the time that old Santy is waking,
The crippled toys look good as new.

She lets him sleep on and she gathers,
All the beautiful things for his pack,
Placing them neatly and safely,
So they may not lose off his back;
And when it is time for his flitting
O'er the chimney tops far and away,
Then only can poor Mrs. Santy
Get a wee nap o' sleep before day.
MATTIE HOLLAND SWANN.
