The Dallas City Cemetery is surrounded by a series of industrial complexes and office buildings. The main entryway to the cemetery is a narrow path located adjacent to the north end of the office building at 10606 Shady Trail. For maps, photographs, and directions to the cemetery, see M. C. Toyer's Dallas City Cemetery page.
The cemetery is divided into 14 blocks. Blocks 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, and 21 are located on the north side of the center driveway. Blocks 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, and 26 are on the south side of of the center drive. Each block is divided into 10 rows and 18 columns, with the exception of Block 14, which has 15 rows and only 3 columns. Rows run north and south. Columns run east and west.
Each section, consisting of 2 columns, is labeled alphabetically beginning with "A" next to the center driveway, and Section "J" the last 2 columns on the far north and far south sides of the cemetery. Plots are labeled l through 10 in the first column of each section and 11 through 20 in the second column of each section.

Thus, each grave can be located by using the Block, Section, and Plot numbers listed on the web page. For example, Mary Ann Lewis is buried in 18/F/15 and this grave can be located by following the center drive to Block 18, walking north past Sections A, B, C, D and E, to the 5th row of the second column of Section F, which will be Plot number 15.
Block 11 begins immediately inside the entryway from Shady Trail on the northwest side of the cemetery. The first visible marker is that of Barney Buchanan, an infant who was born and died June 18, 1933. All of the interments in Blocks 11 and 12 are of infants or very young children, with dates of death of 1933 through 1940. The original markers are 4" X 4" cement blocks with a 2" X 3" metal name plate attached. Over the years some of the metal name plates have been lost or damaged, but identification of most are possible through historical records. Several of the cement markers have been replaced with privately purchased headstones, however.
The most recent interments were made in Block 26 in the far northeastern corner of the cemetery. Interments in this cemetery were discontinued in 1976 with the burial of Raymond D. Wilcox in Block 26, Section J, Plot 20 on Jan. 21, 1976.
In some instances, city employees listed the date of interment as the date of death on the marker.

INTERMENTS @ CITY PAUPERS' CEMETERY

(Data appearing in blue was extracted from the Master Book of the
Dallas City Cemetery, located at the Dallas Public Library, 7th Floor;
the Master Book only gives names, block/section/plot numbers, date
of interment (not date of death) and name of funeral home. Data
appearing in
green was found on loose papers contained in the
aforementioned records at the Dallas Public Library.)

Also included in the library's City Pauper Cemetery collection are the following name plates from the cemetery:

H. Brooks 1884, 9/29/33 (number 190 in the left corner).
C. Snowden 1937
E. Ballew (no dates)
J. A. Simpson (no dates)
Inf. Morrison
Lela Young Sept. 2, 1879 to Feb. 12, 1958
Nellie Erland Born 1888 died 12/14/1958
Webster Key Ashurs 11/9/1904 to 3/3/1959.

All of these are the bright shiny aluminum ones that were made after 1937, except for H. Brooks. His appears to be the original copper or bronze one, and has a number in the lower left hand corner that was done only in the years 1933 and 1934.

Also in this box were two row markers: 14 12 and 2 4. These are the same 2x3 in. square markers, printed in large black numerals with an arrow under "14" pointing east and an arrow under the "2" points west, while the arrow under the "4" points east, etc.
