Gen. Marmaduke

Letters between C.S.A. Gen. Marmaduke, Jo Shelby, and U.S.A. Gen. Schofield,
and other Federal Officers in St. Louis,
concerning the release of certain prisoners as agreed upon.
It seems the Federal Generals had not kept their agreements.
The prisoners were Major Blackwell, Capt. Woodsmall and Adj. J. N. Edwards,
who had been left wounded at Cape Girardeau.
The first two had been sent to Johnson Island while Edwards was being held in St. Louis.
Another letter concerns a Lt. D.C. Burbridge, a recruiter, who had been captured and convicted as a spy.
He was to be executed. Jo Shelby said that if he was, The Federals could expect "full retaliation to be meted out".

The prisoners were exchanged.

Note: The Adj. J.N.Edwards, above, was the John N. Edwards who wrote "Noted Guerrillas" and other Civil War Reference Books.
