Welcome to Emigrant Trails Project |
As settlers moved from the east to the west in the 1800s, many used wagon trains, a "train" of covered wagons, and went together in groups. Fearing attacks by Native warriors who hated before forced from their ancestral lands, these individual families would band together, believing in safety in numbers. Several cities sprung up where these wagon trains were formed. Most were on a riverport, as many of the settlers from the east got to the starting point by water travel.
The established routes were still not without peril. Many died on the route west. Some from hunger or thirst when their provisions were lost or stolen. Some from the weather, when unexpected temperature drops occurred. And some from attacks. However, enough made it through that we have the tales that they left behind.
