AIR UNIT'S OH58 HELICOPTERS

Over the past few years, the U.S. Army has moved away from using the smaller, single engine helicopters. In 1996, they started a program to give away these helicopters to various law enforcement agencies. The Dallas Police Helicopter Unit was lucky enough to receive two of these aircraft.

Old OH58

As you can see in the above photos, when "the girls" arrived, they were in sad shape. Having sat outside through a winter in New York, they looked bad and smelled worse. For the first few months, we flew them just enough to keep the cobwebs away. Finally we were able to take them to Southwest Aviation at Mecham Field in Fort Worth to be refurbished.
New OH58

The last four photos show you what a few months and almost three hundred thousand dollars can do. When we got them back, they were as good as new. They even smelled new. These two ships have turned out to be a real asset to the Helicopter Unit and the citizens of Dallas.
