- Enlisted on October 2, 1861 in Gibson County, Indiana by N. B.
French. At time of enlistment his occupation was listed as farmer, and
his physical attributes were as follows: age: 24 yrs., height: 5 ft-7 3/4
in., complexion: light, eyes: black, hair: black. Mustered into
service on October 30, 1861 at Camp Vanderburgh, Evansville, Indiana, as a
private.
- Absent sick, January and February, 1862 (Note: Pension records indicate
that he contracted Pneumonia at Calhoun, Kentucky, in January 1862 and was confined
to a hospital for over 6 weeks).
- Detailed as Wagoner in Gen. Crittenden's Division, April, 1862.
- Discharged by virtue of re-enlistment at Chattanooga, Tenn., December 31,
1863.
- Mustered in as a veteran at Chattanooga, Tenn., January 6, 1864. At
the time of re-enlistment his physical attributes were as follows: age: 26
yrs., hair: black, eyes: black, complexion: dark, height: 5 ft-10 in.
- Detailed to guard division train, September 8, 1864.
- Promoted to 2nd Corporal, March 1, 1865.
- Detailed as provost guard, April 3, 1865. $3.25 was stopped for loss
of ordinance.
- Promoted to 5th Sergeant, May 1, 1865.
- Absent on furlough, May and June, 1865.
- Mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky, July 21, 1865.

Additional Biographical Information
Charles returned home to Gibson County, Indiana and on February
1, 1866 was married to Emmarintha Simpson. During the following 20 years they
lived in Wayne Co. Illinois, Greenwood County Kansas, Cowley County Kansas, and
Henry County Missouri. Also during this time they had 7 children: George,
Elmer, Louis, Arthur, Elizabeth, Emma, and Cicily.
Charles died of pneumonia on May 8, 1903 in Gibson County,
Indiana and is buried at the Maumee Cemetery in Johnson, Indiana (Gibson County,
Montgomery Township).
