From the Dale Weekly Reporter, February 24, 1888

C. W. Medcalf & Son.

Prominent among the firms and trade interests of Dale is the house of C. W. Medcalf & Son.  Capt. C. W. Medcalf is a native Kentuckian who has passed most of his life in Spencer county, and who is as thorough a Hoosier as if native born.  With his parents he came to this portion of the State in 1829, and until of recent years, most of his life has been passed in agricultural pursuits.  As long ago as 1858 he located in Dale, but soon after he returned to the farm, and he did not re-locate here until 1865, when he engaged in merchandising as one of the firm of Rust & Medcalf.  That co-partnership continued one year; after the dissolution Mr. Medcalf became sole proprieter until forming the firm of Medcalf & Thompson, which continued from 1874 until 1879; upon its dissolution he again remained alone admitting his son, Mr. T. C. Medcalf, about five years ago.  The last named gentleman may be said to have virtually grown up with the business; at the same time he took decided interest in scholastic pursuits and became a teacher, reference to whom was made in our paragraph relative to the public schools.

            C. W. Medcalf & Son are also shippers of produce from Dale, their consignments comprising almost everything that a farmer has to sell, and especially eggs, butter, tallow, chickens, feathers, hides, etc., but as to the aggregate value of these shipments we would not undertake to say.  It is sufficient to state that the house offers a ready home market for whatever their farmer friends have to sell.

The firm cut loose from the old-time credit system two years ago, and since then they have conducted business upon a cash basis.  They carry a large stock of whatever appertains to general merchandise, and by judicious business action they add to the name  and fame of the trade of the town.  The senior partner has served this constituency faithfully and well in the State Legislature; he has also filled other office of honor and trust, and both he and his son are esteemed by those who best know them.  As merchants their career is known to all the community, and in making this mention we only chronicle facts.
