• Early History of Bishop. In August 1961 Bishop celebrated its centennial by honoring not only founder Samuel Bishop but also several of his descendants. A brief summary of the founding of Bishop witten by Derek Schoen in 1998.


• History of the Inyo County Courthouses. A summary of the four courthouses in Independence with a paragraph on architect William H. Weeks, who, by 1915, had designed 1000 buildings in California including Bishop Union High School.


• William H. Weeks - Architect Extraordinaire. A look at the architectural work of the designer of BUHS's main building, Big Pine and Lone Pine High Schools, and the current Inyo County Courthouse as well as a myriad of other structures during the 1890s and the first third of the 20th century. Virtually every city in Central California has (or had) one or more buildings designed by W.H. Weeks, who lived in Watsonville at the beginning of his career, and whose ashes are buried in the Pioneer Cemetery there.

• Mono Lake Political History. History of the Mono Lake Committee and allied organizations' efforts to halt and reverse the Los Angeles' diversion of water -- a diversion that has adversely affect the Mono Lake ecosystem since 1941.

Bishop Union High School-Related

• BUHS Web Site. Bishop Union High School web site including announcements, calendar, campus map, e-mail forum, list of current faculty, and even a few homework assignments from this year's teachers.


• BUHS Alumni Pages. Excellent site moderated by Tom Getts, Class of '57 valedictorian. Includes a listing by year of graduation as well as an alphabetical listing of all alumni who have sumbitted e-mail addresses and perhaps brief bio's.


• Class of 1992 Ten-Year Reunion Page. Site put up by Aime Banta Roberts in 2002 for the Tenth Reunion of the Class of '92.

• Social Security Death Index. Month and year of death as well as some additional information on those who received SS benefits before their deaths. Generally covers 1949 to a couple of months ago.


• California Death Index. Contains exact death dates and county of death from 1940 to 1997 for decedents; often includes mother's maiden name and state of birth.


• World Connect Search Engine. Search the many Gedcom files submitted by genealogy researchers. Often provides ancestors not found in the the SSDI and California Death Records. [Provided ancestors back 300 years for two of the SCHS teachers.]


• Family Search. If you cannot find someone on the three sites immediately above, you may be able to find that person in the LDS records using their Family Search Engine.


• Obituary Daily Times. Daily index of published obituaries distributed via e-mail; search engine available for researching database.


• Rootweb Surname List. 1,000,000+ surnames on file that can be searched. You may also, at no cost, post surnames from your own family.


• County Locator. Need to know the county were Uncle Sylvester died? Try this site. Or perhaps you want to know how many states have a city or town named Paris. [Hint: more than 10 or 20.]

Miscellaneous

• The Inyo Register. The on-line site for Bishop's (and Inyo County's) weekly newspaper. Contains most of the locally-written articles that have appeared in the last 14 days.
 
• Norman Clyde, Legendary Mountineer. A former Independence HS principal whose departure from that school, still a subject of some controversy, led to a long career in the highest Sierras. He was the first to climb many peaks -- without benefit of modern-day hardware. A bit hard to read because of the overly-dark background, it's worth the effort.
