Thanks to a tip from Jeanette Harper, former coordinator of the Inyo County GenWeb site, it is now possible to include links to sites outside of RootsWeb's domain. All of the links formerly in BshLinks.Txt are now included in this page along with some new links and a newly recommended book on the Eastern Sierra.

    Inyo County Books

    • Irwin, Sue. 1991. California's Eastern Sierra: A Visitor's Guide. Los Olivas, CA: Cachuma Press.
If you only buy one book on the Eastern Sierra, make it this one! Not only are there photos on virtually every page, most in color, there is also a wealth of knowledge about the history, geology, and climate of the area. With coverage from the Lone Pine to the Bridgeport, you'll no doubt learn about locales you have not visited even if you've lived in the area all of your life.  **
[Includes an excellent Intoduction by Gordon Wiltsie (BUHS,'70).]

    • Blanchard, Smoke. 1985. Walking Up and Down in the World. San Francisco: Sierra Club.
A Portland, Oregon, mountain climber, Smoke moved to Bishop perhaps in the late 1950s to be near some of the peaks climbed earlier by Norman Clyde. But he also knew some of the "flatlanders." His section on Buttermilk Country describes the wedding of Susan Denton and Jay Jensen. (p. 123). And he not only mentions Dave Sharp but also Dave's son Ted (p. 157) and Ted's sister Dana Lee Sharp (p. 219). An enjoyable book even if you're not a habituee of the Sierras.

    • Austin, Mary Hunter. 1969 reprint. The Land of Little Rain. Gloucester, MA.: Peter Smith.
Not only was Mrs. Austin an experienced and gifted wordsmith, but her observations of Inyo County and surrounding environs, first published in 1903, are as perceptive as those of John Muir in his descriptions of the Sierra Nevada or Joseph Wood Krutch in his writings of the desert Southwest.

    • Wood, Richard Coke. 1973. The Owens Valley and Los Angeles Water Controversy: Owens Valley As I Knew it. Stockton, CA.: University of the Pacific.
Dr. Coke Wood not only grew up and graduated from high school in Bishop but he also taught social studies at BUHS for two years from 1932-34. He was there when LA's Department of Water & Power gained control of the majority of the Owens Valley water. Indeed, he was at one point detained as one of those who might have dynamited the LA Aqueduct. Dr. Wood knew many of the principals in the attempt by valley residents to defeat the LA water grab -- and he saw the exodus of valley residents who were forced to seek "greener pastures" elsewhere because of the lack of water and the Great Depression of the 1930s.
