Whether the name of Wood and Woods were originally one, or not, the families in Marlborough bearing these names, have a different origin, and have always been distinct in town.
1 JOHN WOODS, Sr., of Sudbury,
was one of the petitioners for the township of Marlborough, shared in the
first division of the land, and was one of the prominent men in the place.
He was on the board of selectmen
in 1633, 34 and 35; and
was one of the early members of the church. His will, dated Nov. 26, 1677,
and proved March 8, 1678, mentions sons, John, Isaac, and James, wife,
father Parminter, and son-in-law, John Bellows. It is probable that he
m. Mary Parminter, who d. Aug. 17, 1690, aged 80 years. He had at least
three sons and one daughter.

I have
just found a huge error in Hudson"s History of the Town of Marlborough.
He lists the James Woods that married Dorothy Barnes and Hepzibah Eager
as the son of James Woods and Hopestill Ward. Not possible!
When
James and Hopestill both died in 1718, they left no living issue.
I have both their probate packets. James estate was divided up between
his brother Isaac and the heirs of his other brothers and sisters.
I also
got the probate packet for John Woods who married Lydia Rice. Guess
what - his son James is the one who married Dorothy and Hepzibah.
James signed off on the estate of his father John, and the signature matches
the
signature
on James Woods [husband of Dorothy and Hepzibah] will. The vital
records show that John and Lydia had a son James born 1694. If he
married Dorothy 1718, he would have been 24 at that time.
Now I have to revise my family tree, but I'm really proud of myself for finding it.
